Lawyers specialize. A firm that handles car accident claims may not take divorce cases, so the right lawyer depends on what your case involves.
Choose a practice area below to find law firms that handle that type of case. Browse 193 practice areas, organized by the broader fields of law they belong to.
Start broad. Find the group your case sits under, such as Personal Injury, Family Law or Criminal Defense.
Narrow it down. Each group lists the specific areas beneath it — Motorcycle Accident, Child Custody, DUI & DWI, Probate. The search box above jumps straight to one if you already know the term.
Open the area. A panel slides in with the firms listed under it, their addresses and a link to each full profile. The number next to an area is how many firms handle it.
Areas that match one of our main directory categories open that category page instead, where you can also browse firms by city.
Practice area or specialty: what's the difference?
Most people use the two words to mean the same thing, and on this page they do: the kind of case a lawyer takes on.
There is a narrower legal meaning worth knowing. Some state bars certify attorneys as specialists in a field after extra examination and experience requirements, and in those states a lawyer can only advertise as a "specialist" if they hold that certification. The areas listed here describe the work each firm says it does, not bar certification. If certification matters for your case, ask the firm directly or check your state bar's directory.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which practice area my case falls under?
Start with what happened rather than the legal term for it. A crash with a delivery van is a truck accident case. Being fired after reporting a safety problem is wrongful termination. If your situation sits between two areas, check both — most firms handle several, and every area a firm covers is shown on its profile.
Can one firm appear under several practice areas?
Yes, and most do. A personal injury firm may handle car accidents, slip and fall claims and wrongful death, so it appears under each one. Every area a firm covers is shown on its profile.
Are the firms ranked by how good they are?
No. Within a practice area, firms are ordered by our site score, which reflects the strength and authority of the firm's own website. It is not an assessment of legal ability or case results. Check credentials, client reviews and bar standing before you contact anyone.
Why do some practice areas have no link?
An area only becomes clickable once at least one listed firm handles it. Areas with no firms yet are shown in grey so you can see the full range the directory covers.
How do I get my firm listed under a practice area?
Add your firm through the business listing form and choose your practice areas as you fill it in. You can pick up to ten, and change them later from your account.
