What DA and PA actually measure

Domain Authority (DA) and Page Authority (PA) are scores created by Moz that predict how likely a site or a page is to rank in search results. Both run on a logarithmic 1–100 scale, and both are built mostly from the link graph: how many other sites link to you, and how trusted those linking sites are themselves.

The difference between them is scope. DA describes the whole domain, so every page on your site shares one DA. PA describes a single URL, which is why your homepage and a buried blog post can sit on the same domain with very different PA scores. When you are judging whether a specific page can compete for a keyword, PA is the more useful of the two.

How to read your score

Because the scale is logarithmic, the effort is not evenly spread. Climbing from 20 to 30 is ordinary work. Climbing from 70 to 80 takes the kind of link profile that national publishers have. Judge your number against your direct competitors rather than against an abstract target.

  • 1–20: new or lightly linked. Normal for a young local business site.
  • 21–40: an established small business with a real, if modest, link profile.
  • 41–60: strong regional or niche authority. Competitive in most local markets.
  • 61–100: national brands, major publishers, and long-established institutions.

One caveat worth repeating: DA and PA are Moz's estimates, not Google metrics. Google does not use them and has never published anything equivalent. They are useful for comparison and tracking, not as a target to optimize toward directly.

How to improve DA and PA

Since both scores are driven by links, raising them means earning links from sites people actually trust. That is slow work, but the levers are well understood:

  • Get listed in quality directories. Relevant, moderated directories give you a stable link and put you in front of people searching for what you do.
  • Publish something worth linking to. Original data, a genuinely useful free tool, or a guide nobody else has written.
  • Fix what you already have. Broken pages and dead redirects leak link equity you already earned — our broken link checker finds them.
  • Strengthen internal linking. PA moves when important pages receive links from the rest of your site, not just from outside it.
  • Be patient. Moz recalculates on its own schedule, so a new link may take weeks to show up in the score.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does this tool only cover listed websites?

We report the authority scores we already hold in our own index, which covers the sites listed in the OnToplist directory. That is what makes the tool instant and free with no daily limit. If a domain is not in the directory yet, add it — new listings go to the front of the queue and are usually scored within the hour of going live.

Is this the same as checking DA on Moz?

The numbers come from Moz, so they are the same metric. The difference is that we fetched them in advance rather than querying live, so a score may be a few weeks old. The check date is shown with every result.

What is a good DA score?

It depends entirely on your market. A local plumber competing against other local plumbers may only need a DA in the twenties. A site competing nationally will need far more. Look up two or three competitors here and compare against them — that comparison tells you more than any absolute number.

Why is my Page Authority higher than my Domain Authority?

That is normal for a homepage. Homepages collect most of a site's inbound links, so their PA often runs above the domain-wide DA. The reverse — high DA, low PA — is typical of a new page on an established site.

Does Google use DA or PA?

No. Both are third-party estimates built by Moz from its own crawl of the web. Google has confirmed it has no equivalent public metric. Use them to compare sites and track your own progress, not as a ranking factor to chase.

How often are the scores updated?

We refresh listed domains on a rolling basis, always taking the one checked longest ago. Listings that have never been scored go to the front of that queue, so a newly activated listing is picked up within the hour rather than waiting its turn. Each result shows when it was last checked.

Does getting listed here improve my DA?

A single directory listing will not transform your authority on its own, and anyone promising otherwise is overselling it. What it does is give you a relevant, indexed link plus visibility to people browsing your category — one solid contribution to a link profile that has to be built from many sources.
