She sat and looked out over the water, watching the waves roll in one by one and lap at the shoreline, then return in the direction from which they came. She heard the seagulls cry out, and saw them dive into the water, reemerging with their treasure to greedily inhale. Tiny shells dotted the shoreline, and little fiddler crabs found their way along the sand and into their holes. It was so peaceful here, so unlike her lifetime of memories. The memories came at inopportune times and she often had to push them away so that she could focus on the here and now, but today she let them come.
She thought back to her childhood. Her father left the family when she was just a baby, never having the desire to look back, never supporting the family. Did he even wonder about her? She would never know. She was raised by a single mother who worked minimum wage jobs and came home in the evenings tired, frustrated, and "nervous". She often watched TV while her mother slept on the sofa. She was brite and did well in school.
