Thanks Mom and Dad

I have many things to thank my parents for. Today I am going to talk about one of those things. The many trips we made around this country (and others) that gave me the awareness of how others lived. Thanks to my mom and dad I have been to every one of the Continental United States. I have traveled through Canada and Mexico. ( I lived in Europe for a while in the 70"s, but that was with my husband). It was during our annual summer vacations that we traveled from one region of the country to another. I was at the 1964 Worlds Fair in New York City. I have spent fantastically starred filled nights in the Wyoming mountains. The back roads from North Carolina all the way to Mississippi were amazing and full of surprises. I was 15 when we went to California and I lost my bikini top in the Pacific ocean when a wave pulled me under and dragged me along the bottom. It was quite a surprise when I stood up without my top to find my dad with the old 8 mm camera rolling. I learned many things during these travels. Most importantly - that I was not the only person in my world. I found people who lived in grass huts in Mexico. I witnessed families in all different parts of America living in little two room houses. When we traveled it was mainly back roads and local highways. It was a great way to see the country in the 60's and 70's. The black hills of South Dakota are unbelievable. It's as if they call out with the history of the American Indian wars. The cultural vibe that comes from Washington DC is addicting. If anyone should visit anywhere it is our Nations Capital. I can't write in such a short time how much I gained from our travels as a family. I truly believe it helped me become a well-rounded individual. It gave me the opportunity to see all the cultures that are right here in our borders and some outside of our borders. My parents gave me the gift of knowledge regarding the diversity of people and I am forever grateful to them.
