In came twitter, a fan montage and the best songs we have heard in a long time. Ryan is everything at once, cleverly fusing rock and pop together and teaming it with inspirational/emotional lyrics. It’s not often our generation of hard-bitten, cynical, weary music fans find something so refreshingly pure and simple that we can’t help but love it. But make no mistake, Ryan Star can’t be pigeonholed because as soon as you define him, he comes back at you with another take on what you thought was his definitive sound. Sarah Jo Secrets feel very fortunate to get this interview, so without further ado, Jo and Sarah proudly present to you our first ever Secret Star of The Month… The very talented Ryan Star! SJS: First of all Ryan, here at Sarah Jo Secrets we know your music very well, but for those readers out there, who are new to your music, can you define your style of music to us? Ryan: It comes from many parts of my life. Like when I was younger I was in a rock band so its got a lot of rock influence and those are my roots, then as a solo performer which is the piano there’s a Tori Amos edge I bring to it all. Then i put it all together for this record which is a lot more of a pop record. So essentially it’s like footprints of where I have been, I would still classify myself as a rock artist because the attitude is still there for me, if I go deeper into it, its almost cinematic for me. I always say my music is like the song at the end credits of a movie. SJS: So as far as the film influence goes, what film do you wish you had done the soundtrack for? Ryan: Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. My song losing my memory would be the end credits for it. Either that or Star Wars. SJS: I have been reading the Twilight books and I think your Dark Horse album from Rockstar Supernova works very well with it.

Ryan: I am glad you’re reading the twilight books. I so want to be on one of those soundtracks. Music doesn’t typically inspire me. I don’t listen to music and think, ok I will go and write a song, some people do and that’s where the copycat stuff comes from. I go and watch a film and write about the colours or the emotion because I truly feel like we are doing the same thing but in a different medium. SJS: If you weren't doing music, what would you be doing today? How would you express yourself artistically? Ryan: That’s the best question anyone’s ever asked me, usually I get asked what I would be if I wasn’t a musician and there is no answer, what you just asked is the biggest philosophical question I struggle with, when we die I don’t believe we don’t remain in our bodies. Therefore I don’t know if we still have voices but I know we still have the light in us that still needs to shine somehow and express itself so for me its music here on earth. That’s how I get my emotions out, especially singing its spiritual for me. I don’t know how I would let it out. Maybe I would spend more time volunteering or teaching where I felt like I’m still putting good out there because I feel like my music, and I don’t do this consciously and I’m not saying I always will, but for now I feel like a lot of good comes out of my music, a lot of inspiration, I want to put that somewhere else so yeah probably physically put it out there like the breathe video. SJS: Gareth Shanker from the U.K has asked If there is a future plan for a Stage reunion? (Ryan’s first band Stage were signed by Madonna’s Maverick records before Ryan went solo) Ryan: Good question, I would say for sure. We grew up best friends and although we are in different parts of our lives, doing very different things, we’re still passionate about it. When the time starts to be right I’ll probably release the unreleased Stage material that never made it out during our break up. The stuff we were doing on our own which is some of the music i'm most proud . I'll release some of that stuff, see how people react to it and the first chance I get. I will steal the guys away from their day jobs and go on a little tour or something. SJS: Heidi Earwood from Missouri asked If there are any plans to bring the Stage music to your show? She believes those songs need a bigger audiences because they are fantastic.

Ryan: There’s so many new songs because 11.59 hasn’t been released yet. New songs that I can't wait to play first and foremost but as I reach more people I believe my roots and history and Stage will also reach more people, and then When I sense more people at the shows want to hear those songs then I will play them, and that’s going to be exciting for me. I sort of miss them, I really do. SJS: So when is the new album 11.59 going to be released? We are all waiting for it! Ryan: Yeah for such a long time I was like not in a rush and I was very much taking my time and not worried. Now I’m more impatient than anybody. I'm tired of being patient! I wanted to tour first and make sure the songs were right and they are right, so I want it to come out. The plan is to get it out in the next few months I believe, The E.P was released in the mean time because so many songs are getting out there, like the lie to me soundtrack but the people, my friends and fans haven’t heard it and yet these Hollywood people are placing it on adverts, so why do they have it but the fans don’t. SJS: So with the new album will there be a tour in the UK and Europe? Ryan: I cannot wait to do that, I really can’t. I think that when it all starts rolling the right way in the States, then the next step would be to do that. That would be quite the scene for me I have been waiting my whole life to do that, I’ve never played a show out there.

SJS: What do you miss the most when you are on tour? Ryan: The thing I don’t want to live without, but I have to, is New York Pizza. The food here is amazing so I can’t eat the way I want to, so I lose weight, also as much as I don’t like it, my blackberry because I have to keep in touch with facebook and twitter. SJS: If you could collaborate with any artist who would you like to work with? Ryan: Probably Kanye West, the style of his latest album is something that interests me a lot because its very simple and stripped down. Also Lilly Allen, I don’t know what it is but I want her in many ways. Literally her music is attractive to me. It emasculates me, it makes me feel like I could never please somebody. I can listen to her because I know I can't. Yeah she’s someone i'd love to have in the studio to rock out, have it out or make out or whatever I don’t know. SJS: Antionette Guadanano from Missouri asks what’s the best thing a fan has done to promote you? Ryan: Take hundreds of CD’s to radio stations and harass them to play it, to make thousands of fliers and literally plaster the town for when we get there, these are the people who take it upon themselves to promote me. These are really special people that I make a point of getting to know them because they are an investment. They take it upon themselves to be a promotion team.

SJS: So what has been the most embarrassing tour moment? Was it the cow-smashing incident? (Ryan smashed a wooden cow at Mansfield college, thinking it was a prank by American Idol winner David Cook, Unknown to him, it was a prop for the drama department and Ryan had to pay $1500 for a pile of wood) Oops! Ryan: No that was my most badass moment! When I was younger and touring with my band Stage, we were playing in Spokane Washington. I thanked Seattle Washington. We weren’t even in that city. I tried to covering it by saying “I’m just kidding” then I realised the whole place was totally silent. I totally spinal tapped myself! SJS: What’s the most embarrassing song on your iPod? Ryan: Well I don’t think it’s embarrassing but most people find it weird. But I am a big fan of Belinda Carlisle, I love her voice and her music. So I’ll say that one and also when I was younger I had the C&C music factory cd. Do you remember that? SJS: Yes I also have Belinda Carlisle on my iPod so you’re not that weird. Ryan: Well then I guess we’re both geeks!! :) SJS: So have you ever driven your own Tour bus? Ryan: I have not because I have never had a tour bus; I’m still on the up, so I travel in a van or trailers. I want to make it real and deserving, where the size warrants the tour bus. But yes I do drive my own van!! The whole band take it in turns to drive! Ok so to end the interview, here's our quick fire round, 20 questions, this or that.
