This F1 paper car is a 1981 Interscope Cosworth, drived by Danny Ongais, the paper model was designed by Sunny78, and the scale of this Formula One car paper model is 1:12. Danny Ongais is a former racecar driver from the United States.
He is the only native Hawaiian to compete at the Indianapolis 500. A motorcycle, sports car, Formula One, and drag racing competitor, in 1963 and 1964 Ongais won the American Hot Rod Association AA Gas Dragster Championship and in 1965 he added the National Hot Rod Association AA Dragster championship title.
A flamboyant figure on the racing circuit, Danny’s nickname was “On-Gas” for his ‘balls to the wall’ driving style. He was also known as the “Flyin’-Hawaiian”.
He was a Formula One driver who participated in six Grands Prix, debuting on October 2, 1977, and recorded a best result of seventh. In 1996 at the age of 54, Ongais agreed to be the substitute driver for Scott Brayton in the Indy 500 who had died in a practice crash shortly before the race. Starting last, Danny finished 7th in what was his final 500.
In 1981 he had a severe accident in the Indy 500, which almost cost his life. Several arm and leg fractures as well as internal injuries were the result. Then in 1985 at the Michigan 500, he spun on the exit of turn two and barrel-rolled down the back straight, during a race which had several crashes throughout its duration.
The 65th Indianapolis 500 was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday, May 24, 1981. A hectic month of May was interrupted several times by rain. Bobby Unser took the checkered flag as the winner, with Mario Andretti second. The following morning, USAC officials ruled that Unser had passed cars illegally while exiting the pit area on lap 149, and issued him a one-position penalty. The next morning, the official posted results scored Unser finishing second, and declared Andretti the race winner.
After a lengthy protest and appeals process, the penalty was rescinded, and Unser was reinstated the victory on October 9. Officially, it became Unser’s third-career Indy 500 victory and his final win in Indy car competition. Unser stepped out of the car at the end of the season, and ultimately retired from driving. The race is widely considered one of the most controversial races in Indy history.
The race was officially part of the 1981-82 USAC season. However, most of the top entrants participated in the 1981 CART/PPG Indy Car World Series. Championship points for the 1981 Indy 500 were not awarded towards the CART title.
