Before the End, After the Beginning: Short Stories from Dagoberto Gilb

Dagoberto Gilb is an award-winning author of both fiction and non-fiction. In 2009, he suffered a stroke at his home in Austen, TX. I’ve been told it took six months for him to be able to begin to physically write again. Over the many long months it took for him to recover, he did what he does best – he wrote. Before the End, After the Beginning, a collection of 10 short stories, is the result. Gilb is a master storyteller, who will sweep you up into a world you may or may not be familiar with, whether it’s the world of being hospitalized or being Mexican-American. This collection, while it may open your eyes to many things, is above all thoroughly entertaining.
It was hard to pick examples to offer up because I don’t think there’s a clunker in the mix. Gilb shows his breadth of writing, with each story offering a very different approach from the last. I was blown away by how artfully he was able to draw different types of life lessons for us. Read the rest of my review at http://popcornreads.com/?p=2186.
