I am a native of Lake City, SC and teach karate as a way of life. I serve Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I am the chief instructor and owner of Johnston Karate. I have been actively training in the martial arts since June 10th, 2002, when I enrolled at the Nippon Kokusai Karate Center (NKKC) location in Lake City, SC. At that same location, I obtained the rank of shodan (first degree black belt), under Sensei Craig McKenzie, in October 2004. NKKC is affiliated with Japan International Karate Center (JIKC). Heiwado is the style of karate officially taught by JIKC, which was founded by the late Hirano Kiyohisa-soke.I took over management of the Lake City NKKC dojo in early 2004 while Sensei McKenzie continued his instruction. In late April 2005, I officially split from NKKC and founded Johnston Karate. Since then, I have had the opportunity to train in various other styles. Besides having continued teaching my own formulation of Heiwado over the years, I have trained at various other JIKC dojo as time allows. I trained once or twice a week at a boxing gym in Sumter, SC, for about 3 years. I also trained once a week for a year and a half in Brazilian Jiujitsu, in Conway, SC.Current Affiliations, Qualifications, and Dojo LocationsIn November 2011, I officially joined the International Fighting Arts Federation as a lifetime member, under Sensei Dwayne Eaddy. We have a shared goal of keeping "politics" and unnecessary bureaucracy out of martial arts instruction. I will be testing for 3rd degree black belt (sandan) under Sensei Eaddy in September, 2012.I am studying for my fitness trainer certification through ISSA (International Sports Sciences Association).I currently run one karate dojo in Lake City, SC.What I charge for classesAt our Lake City location, we are currently charging $35 monthly. Fees for private lessons are $20 hourly for sessions in the Lake City area, and a non-negotiable minimum of $50 hourly if I travel to you. All travel expenses incurred are also expected to be paid for. Please schedule private lessons with me at least 48 hours ahead of time.
