On May 18, in an effort to quell protest the National Assembly in Quebec passed Bill 78 - emergency legislation that includes a number of repressive measures. It's an unwise move that is showing every sign of backfiring. Léo Bureau-Blouin, president of the association of junior colleges said “We deplore that the government chose the path of repression rather than that of negotiation.” The Canadian Civil Liberties Association has raised serious concerns about the new law.Bill 78 drastically limits freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly rights in Quebec.
