How hard is it to explain to children the meaning of Memorial Day? Is the fact that this important day is about the many fallen soldiers that have fought for America’s freedom since the Civil War? Or is it the fact that there are still many men and women fighting for our freedom = libertad. Originally, Memorial Day = Día de los Caídos was also known as Decoration Day = Día de Decoración. Many women would decorate the tombs with flags and flowers of the fallen soldiers after the Civil War. And the holiday became official on May 5, 1868 when General John Logan proclaimed it an honor day for the fallen soldiers = soldados caídos. But it was not observed until May 30th, 1868. At first, it was not widely accepted as a holiday by many other states. In 1890, Memorial Day was adapted by all of the northern states.
