Fanning the Flames of Fear and AngerI have no doubt that many Tea Partiers have a genuine concern about the direction of the country, but mass movements offer cover to people whose lives are driven by passionate hatred and during times of discontent, hate becomes respectable, because it can masquerade as patriotism.

As of 2009, there are 1,002 known hate groups operating across the country, including neo-Nazis, Klansmen, white nationalists, neo-Confederates, racist skinheads, Black separatists, border vigilantes and others....a 244% jump after the installation of Barack Obama. Right wing extremists have been arrested in alleged plots to assassinate the nation’s first Black president.
