Poll: Most Southern Baptist Pastors Say Electing a Black Leader Would be Good

It is anticipated that on next month the Rev. Fred Luter , pastor of Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans, will be elected as the first African-American president of the Southern Baptist Church (SBC). According to the results of a recent poll conducted by Lifeway Research, the majority of SBC pastors believe such a historic event would be good for the denomination.In the survey, pastors were asked to express the level to which they agreed or disagreed with the following statement: “Without regard to any individual, I think it would be a good thing to have an African-American as president of the Southern Baptist Convention.” Nearly 1000 pastors responded.
