The hat is also a fashion statement, ceremonial garb, religious habit, occupational habit, military habit and for safety. In European and American society the hat was a symbol of status. In Milan, Italy 18th century the best quality of hats were made and the term, millinery was coined. Bonnets were worn in the early 19th century. Gradually it became fashionable for the bonnet becoming larger accessorized with features, ribbon and lace. By the end of the 19th century hat styles were extended with wide brims and flat crowns. In the jazz era mid 1920s women's hair was shorter. Following shorter hair short brim hats hugged the head.Hat fashion was influenced by events in history.
