The crown for the pound for pound king goes to… Manny Pacquiao. The Filipino boxer has once again topped the pound for pound rankings by The Ring, which is considered by many boxing enthusiasts as the bible of boxing. The rankings have been rated by the magazine’s editorial board and with the other respected boxing journalists around the world. This is a great news as it will give him a another boost in his confidence just before he goes up against Juan Manuel Marquez on November 12, 2011 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, in Las Vegas, Nevada. This marks the third match up between Pacquiao and Marquez.Pacquiao vs Marquez 3 - Pacquiao is still considered as the undisputed pound for pound king in boxing. He has topped the rankings for quite some time now, after he toppled Floyd Mayweather, Jr. The rankings was released right after the fight if Mayweather and Victor Ortiz over the weekend. Mayweather won with a knockout and grabbed the WBC Welterweight Championship belt. But it was still was not enough to reclaim the number one ranking. Mayweather has not played for almost two years, and as a result, before the fight, his name was taken out of the rnkings due to inactivity. The last time he has fought was back in April in 2010 where he won against Sugar Shane Mosley with a unanimous decision. He has a record of 52 wins, 3 losses, and 2 draws, with 38 knockouts. Pacquiao has been on the list for 407 weeks now.Michael Rosenthal of RingTV.com stated the reason why the panel chose Pacquiao over Mayweather. He reasoned, “Mayweather can’t leave boxing for 16 months, defeat a good (not special) opponent in a less than satisfying manner and expect to regain his status as the No. 1 fighter in the world. He’ll have to earn more than that to earn it.”Mayweather has still maintained his non-tarnished record after having 42 fights with no losses. But he was met with criticism after he won with a not so sportsman like way. The still undefeated fighter unleashed his 1-2 combination while the young boxer was still appearing listening to the instructions given by the referee Joe Cortez. Ortiz then fell down just a few seconds before the end of the fourth round. The controversial ending was the fault of Ortiz that is he lost as he forgot the first rule of boxing: Always protect yourself. And as a result, he paid the huge price. But although some analysts think that it was Ortiz’ misstep that cost him his title and that Mayweather was not illegal; but it was still considered a cheap shot.Meanwhile, the People’s Champ also received some criticism and this time, and it came from the fighters he had fought in his last three fights. Rosenthal commented, “We don’t approve of Pacquiao’s last three opponents, Joshua Clottey, Antonio Margarito, and Shane Mosley, each of whom probably was less qualified to face the Filipino icon than Ortiz was to face Mayweather. However, Pacquiao has obliterated seven big-name opponents in the time Mayweather has done to three.” Pacquiao has also taken down David Diaz, Oscar de la Hoya, Ricky Hatton, and Miguel Cotto, while Mayweather defeated Mosley and Marquez. Pacquiao's training has already started in Baguio, Philippines. He then added, “Thus, there is no reason Mayweather should leap frog Pacquiao to the top. So, it’s Pacquiao No. 1 and Mayweather No. 2 in the pound for pound ratings.” With Mayweather being back on the rankings and on the second spot, the rest of the fighters have placed a step down. Bernard Hopkins was pushed out of the Top 10.Meanwhile, Pacquiao’s upcoming opponent, Marquez, is now on the fifth spot after placing fourth last week. The Mexican boxer has just come from a successful win against Likar Ramos with a knockout. He has appeared on the list in 236 weeks. On his next bout, this is bound to be the third and final instalment of the Pacquiao vs Marquez 3. They first met in 2004 where the fight ended with a controversial draw. On their rematch, Pacquiao won the fight with an also controversial split decision. With their fight soon to come up, Pacquiao is slated to prove that he is still on top of the game and the man to beat. You can watch Pacquiao vs Marquez online on this site come November, 2011.
