Monday Musings
Published on 2012-08-20 07:46:00
It's been a busy week since returning from our house swap in Cotswolds, England. We spent most of it back up at our cottage, so our daughters could attend On The Edge, the teen evening programme at New Horizon Christian conference in Coleraine. I was able to attend on Friday evening - it was challenging and inspiring, and maybe next year we will manage to attend more of the conference! Also during the week we met up with some friends for coffee/ice-cream in Portstewart On another evening [..]
My parents 50th wedding anniversary
Published on 2012-08-17 10:44:00
On Monday evening we celebrated my parents 50th wedding anniversary with a family meal. My brothers, their wives and most of the other grandkids were there, along with our family of 5. We had a lovely meal in Parsons Nose in Hillsborough. We didn't manage a group photo at the restaurant, but here are my parents and kids back at our house later. It is rare to get all 5 on the sofa at once, looking in the same direction - but I think we managed it! I remember way back when it was my parents [..]

We are home and (sort of) unpacked after a great 9 days in the Cotswolds and Bristol. So as I sit down to watch the closing cereymony of the London 2012 Olympics here is a wee recap of our week that was. Friday - arrived into Bristol airport, and relived some happy memories as we crossed over the Clifton Suspension Bridge.
Arlington Row Cottages, Bibury in the Cotswolds
Published on 2012-08-06 17:45:00
William Morris described Bibury as the most beautiful village in England, and this row of picturesque 17th century cottages called Arlington Row definitely lived up to expectations. As our house swap in the Cotswolds continues, we explored the area today, dodging the showers (mostly) and Arlington Row was definitely a highlight. Here are a few of photos I took today The rest of the village was very pretty too and the ducks were very sociable
Stroud Farmers Market - House Swap in the Cotswolds, England
Published on 2012-08-05 15:07:00
On our first morning of our house swap near Stroud, we needed to buy some groceries, and combined a visit to the supermarket for the basics with a visit to Stroud's famous Farmers Market. I was so impressed with the quality, variety and freshness of the produce on dozens of stalls. Many provided free samples, so it was a tasty visit too! As well as many food stalls, there were local crafts including wood carving, jeweller, wool, and plants. Some street musicians added to [..]

We usually arrange our home exchanges through www.homeexchange.com So far in the last few years we have been to Dublin, Boston & Cape Cod, Galway, France and Donegal. This summer however, we have arranged a swap with an old school friend of mine, who now lives in an historic old mill in the Cotswolds. Review of Bananagram - fun family game
Published on 2012-08-01 10:23:00
I bought this Bananagram game at Britmums Live conference in London last month for a number of reasons: 1. It was promoted as a game for all ages (from 7 up) 2. It was Olympic 2012 special addition and I was in London and promised to bring home a souvenir 3. It looked fun while being educational too 4. Easily transported for family holidays We have already played it with friends and family .... and it has been very popular.

I could call the post lazy, hazy days of summer - but that wouldn't be quite correct. We have been busy (with peace camp poetic tents and distressed painted pine bookcases) and the weather has been pretty good with either being fresh and breezy, or amazingly warm - we have even spent a few afternoons sitting on the beach (usually it is only warm enough to walk, but not stay in one place for too long!) Inspired by Elizabeth I am planning to start of my bloggy week with a roundup of what's been happening. I have already blogged about our great day on St Patrick's Day with our friends from USA. Yesterday we had a quieter but still enjoyable day. It was Mothers Day here, so it started with breakfast in bed with the help of my 7 year old - tea and toast (with LOTS of butter and jam!) I received some lovely cards and gifts from my kids - a plant, a book, a Reese peanut butter bar (love them), an [..]
My St Patrick's Day 2012

I hope wherever you are in the world you had a great St Patrick's Day. Usually I attend the St Patrick's Day parade in Belfast, but this year I had a much better alternative....to spend it with my bloggy friend Elizabeth from America. We met online a few years ago, and in 2010 met for the first time in Belfast. This year we were delighted to meet up with them again, and in exchange for the use of our cottage for a couple of nights, the talented and lovely Elizabeth offered us a family photo s [..]

Hellebores in the garden - Christmas Roses and Lenten Roses
Published on 2012-03-12 04:55:00
My parents are wonderful gardeners, and when we were visiting I took some photos of their collection of hellebores (no, I didn't know what they were called either - my parents told me!). I knew their more common name of "Christmas Rose" but I have also learned they are called "Lenten Roses" as they often bloom during Lent - as these ones are doing. Here are a selection I love the delicate soft shades, especially when there is not much colour in the rest of the garden. Do you have a favour [..]

I know it took me a whole week to blog about last week's explore, and here I am again, sharing where we went today. On the way to visit my parents we stopped off today at Scrabo Tower. It can be seen from miles around, overlooking the town of Newtownards and Strangford Lough. It is quite a steep climb up from the carpark. It has been years since we have been up here, and it was steeper than I remember.....but then I am probably 20 years older! There are stunning views in all directions. [..]

As has become my routine, this Sunday morning I went for another walk/explore in our local area before church, while the rest of the family were at Sunday School. I headed down the side of church, and have always loved this curved terrace. And here is the view of the church from here. There is an old cemetry which is closed up, but I would love to explore around it some day. Here are a few photos I took through the railings.
