20 Years
Published on 2010-07-02 09:10:00
Yesterday, July 1, was a milestone for me. July 1, 1990 was my first day as campus pastor of Chi Alpha at Texas A&M. What started as something I thought I would do for a couple of years before I went into “real ministry” has been a 20 year journey. I have been honored and blessed to have worked with some pretty incredible university students and watch them become some pretty incredible men and women of faith. I haven’t been on this journey by myself. I have sha
It Should Work My Way

Who don’t some things work the way you think they should work? Take Google for instance. I have a personal Gmail account and two Gmail app accounts. I can log into one, but not two or three at the same time. If I am in my personal email and want to see my Google Reader for an app account, it signs me out of my email. Why can’t I have all three open and still get to the Google Reader I want? Yes, I know I can send my email all to one account and use labels. Yes, the

Pastoring Your Campus - SLA 2010 View more presentations from xajondee. I am speaking to campus pastors at the North Texas District Chi Alpha Student Leadership advance this weekend. I will be hosting a session on how they can extend their influence to their campus community through conversations conducted using social media. Wanting and Needing

I want one of the new iPad’s. There. I’ve said it. I want one. Now the question I have to answer is, “Do I need it?" I use a netbook for my computing because I am out and about all the time. When I am at home, it is hooked up to a 23.6 inch monitor. It meets my computing needs. But not my computing wants. I want an iPad. Just like I wanted the netbook. At the time I bought the netbook I didn’t need it. Now I do. I can’t imagine
To Start A Fire
Published on 2010-02-23 06:59:00
The temperature is in the upper 30’s this morning, which brings me to my problem: “Do I start a fire in the fireplace?” This is not an exercise in aesthetics. It is a practical question. The front part of our house is heated by a wood burning fireplace. My office is in the front of the house. The temperature in this part of the house is cool but not unpleasant right now. But the temperature is expected to drop. Will I be chilly? Will it really get cold
The Time Has Come

From: Juan Enriquez Date: Jan 29, 2010 Subject: An idea whose time has come For too long we have been too complacent about the workings of Congress. Many citizens had no idea that members of Congress could retire with the same pay after only one term, that they didn't pay into Social Security, that they specifically exempted themselves from many of the laws they have passed (such as being exempt from any fear of prosecution for sexual harassment) while ordinary citizens

The Importance of Traditions
Published on 2009-12-10 07:06:00
While we were visiting my parents this Fall, my daughters asked my Mom to show them how to fry chicken. Mom makes the best fried chicken in the world (yes, I can back that up) so I was glad they wanted to learn. This past Monday, one of the girls told me she wanted to fry chicken for dinner “like Granny”. So that evening she got out the things she needed and proceeded to prepare her meal. I was minimally involved with a few technical things, but she did the prep and cookin

Sitting in the Dark
Published on 2009-11-05 18:07:00
I am sitting in my front yard in the dark. The sky to the west is that beautiful reddish-purple that makes you wish you had been out 10 minutes earlier to see the sun set. All I hear are the night insects and an occasional snort from one of the horses in the pasture. Sometimes there is the sound of a distant vehicle heading up and down the hills on the county road. It is quiet. And it is mine to savor. It is a good evening. Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry Posted via email fr

I am making cupcakes for Chi Alpha's Cupcake Camp tonight. Since a "cupcake" is defined as "a cake cooked in a tin shaped cup" I am expanding the genre and making cornbread with a chili-topping cupcake.Yeah, I know. But it will be fun.Technorati Tags: cupcake_camp

Speaker's Tip: Don't tell the audience you aren't prepared via Signal vs. Noise by Jason F. on 10/29/09 Lately I’ve been seeing more speakers hop up on stage at a conference and say “I didn’t prepare anything so I’m just gonna wing it.” Or they’ll let you know that they’re “Sorry about the quality of the slides – I put them together quickly on the flight over here this morning.” I’m all for winging it, but when you say “I’m not really prepared” in front o

The Rise of the Casual Christian Tribe via Mark Sayers by marksayers on 10/28/09 Religious researcher George Barna has named a new Tribe on the religious spectrum, the Casual Christian. Barna writes, “Casual Christianity is faith in moderation. It allows them to feel religious without having to prioritize their faith. Christianity is a low-risk, predictable proposition for this tribe, providing a faith perspective that is not demanding. A Casual Christian can be all the things that they es
