The best way to start the "Requirement Gathering Phase"
Published on 2012-03-12 09:24:00
I'm basically a "business analyst". I get to work mainly at the start of a project, where someone has to go in and ask lots of questions. The work is given different names across the industry (discovery, initial analysis, requirements workshops) but it is basically trying to work out what the client wants. As well as different names there are a million ways of running this type of work. I'll let you Google various terms to discover a wealth of advice covering:The topics to discuss - Anything fro [..] > read more
Do we need project managers?
Published on 2012-03-08 04:55:00
Do IT projects really need project managers? I'm starting to think they don't.Before I continue let me define the type of IT project I am talking about. It is a website or Intranet project, costing anything upto £500'000, and requiring a team of 3-6 developers working over 6 months. My experience is mainly in Microsoft technologies so I'm thinking of a 'typical' SharePoint Intranet system for a blue chip client. In the projects I have worked on (over many years for many clients) the project mana [..] > read more

Understanding a clients requirements - The dangers of the initial estimate
Published on 2012-03-01 05:25:00
Don't estimate purely on what a client asks for. They don't really know what they want, and generally only ask for visual things or end products. Estimating, at the beginning of the project, against their requirements documentation will mean you miss out stuff and undersell the project. The first thing that normally happens on an IT project is the agency will try to understand the clients requirements (hopefully anyway!). This process begins by having a good look and read at the 'requirements do [..] > read more
