The Great Gatsby

Published on 2012-05-23 09:37:00

Like many of you out there, I have long adored the stories of Scott F. Fitzgerald. In particular, "The Great Gatsby". I even adored the 1974 movie version starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, and so I was pleasantly surprised to learn there was an updated version to be release by the visionary director, Baz Luhrmann. And now we have a first glimpse at what to expect: > read more

L.A. Story

Published on 2012-05-15 23:28:00

After 10+ years in my beloved NYC, I am starting a new adventure on the west coast, (Los Angeles to be exact). I will always consider myself a bi-coastal person, so while New York will always be near & dear, I can't wait to explore a whole new city. Any tips, my California friends? "I love Los Angeles. It reinvents itself every two days." - Billy Connolly > read more

Daper for The Kentucky Derby

Published on 2012-05-05 22:38:00

Hats, cocktails and horses. (And yes, probably in that order.) The Kentucky Derby is upon us, as is Cinco de Mayo. Margarita vs. Mint Julep. Can't we do both? *Update: The winner was "I'll Have Another". Coincidence on this day of festive cocktails? I think not. > read more

MCA: Passing of a Beastie Boy

Published on 2012-05-04 20:08:00

There is not bar or radio station in New York (& beyond) today that is not playing the classic sounds of the Beastie Boys. With the passing of BB founder Adam Yauch, aka MCA, those of us who grew up with his rhymes are mourning a part of our youth as well. "You got to Brooklyn. Sleep peacefully, MCA." Be sure to revisit this video playlist from The New Yorker. Coldplay's tribute to Adam Yauch. Hollywood Bowl, 4 May 2012. > read more

Letters of Note

Published on 2012-04-30 22:18:00

Let's bring back letters. Real, hand-written, heartfelt, witty letters. As text messages and emails increasingly become our only mode of communication, (an iphone to actually call someone? Don't be silly.) may I suggest the need to slow it down and go old-school. Because frankly, mail has become a depressing cycle of bills & ad flyers, and we need to make it fun again. I have been making an effort to drop a card or two in the mail now and then, and it makes a big difference. > read more

Going Bi-Coastal: Stylegroove Media

“I still have my feet on the ground, I just wear better shoes.” While cleaning out my camera's the other day, I came across some footage I had taken at Toronto's Bata Shoe Museum last summer. Aside from the fabulous shoes on display (+ a special on my favorite 1920's era), we were taken down into the archives, where thousands more shoes from around the world, from all decades & cultures, where tucked away. Be Inspired (to travel)

Published on 2012-04-11 11:50:00

My wanderlust has come back with a vengeance. This is nothing new. I was born this way, and I constantly battle the need to pack a bag and head out on a new travel adventure. So whenever I see other people compelled to do the same, get out there and explore, and perhaps make a difference, they have my undivided attention. After countless rave reviews from friends and critics alike, and months of waiting for a coveted ticket, my friend and I finally attended "Sleep No More", an interactive theatre piece at the McKittrick Hotel. After grabbing a much needed cocktail in the 1920's themed bar, we donned our white masks and started to make our way through the dark & haunted hotel. Antiquing

Published on 2012-03-31 15:39:00

One of my favorite things to do on my occasional weekend trips to local NY small towns, is visit the local antique shops. I have always been fascinated by vintage items, and the stories and histories surrounding them. Every time I walk into a home that looks entirely styled by pottery barn, or void of personal touches, I shudder.
