Jason Terry: The Boston Celtics are "going to win again"
Published on 2012-08-17 10:29:00
Who am I to argue with Jason Terry, the man who got a tattoo of the Larry O'Brien Trophy on his biceps eight months before his team won the actual, real-life Larry O'Brien Trophy? You could say that Terry got the tattoo back in 2010 as some sort of guarantee that Dallas was going to win the NBA championship that season. In hindsight, it looks pretty good. But I'd like to think of it more as Terry's sign of confidence about what his team had and what he thought they could do with that talent. F [..]
Jared Sullinger understands his role with the Boston Celtics
Published on 2012-08-16 13:01:00
Jared Sullinger decided to reward those of us who thought that watching the NBA Summer League for two weeks would be riveting television by revealing to us his full arsenal. He showed that his low-post moves and his ability to put the ball in the bucket were suited perfectly for the not-so-bright lights of the Summer League, a league that is notoriously filled with a few first round studs, some first-rounders from previous years that haven't seen enough time in actual NBA games to improve, a cou [..]
Report: Boston Celtics showing interest in Jared Sullinger
Published on 2012-06-19 20:25:00
When news broke on Monday that Ohio State power forward Jared Sullinger had been medically red-flagged with a back issue, you could pretty much hear the footsteps of numerous NBA executives running away from drafting him. At the same time, you could only imagine the smiles of other team execs sitting outside of the lottery hoping that the All-American falls to them. According to Sam Amico of Fox Sports Ohio, the Boston Celtics are one of those teams licking their chops for Sullinger. Jared Sull [..]
Boston Celtics work out Joey Dorsey
Published on 2012-06-19 12:42:00
According to a report from the Greek website Red Planet, the Boston Celtics brought in power forward Joey Dorsey for a workout. If you love the Greek language and speak/read it consistently, you can go ahead and click on the link to see for yourself. Otherwise, you'll have to take my word for it. For those of you who forgot, Dorsey was a key contributor to the 2008 Memphis Tigers team, which included the likes of Derrick Rose and Chris Douglas-Roberts, that destroyed their extraordinarily weak [..]
Report: Boston Celtics considering "strong offer" to Bulls center Omer Asik
Published on 2012-06-18 12:01:00
With the Boston Celtics looking to add size and improve their rebounding this offseason, Sam Smith of Bulls.com is reporting that the C's are going to strongly pursue Chicago's backup center, Omer Asik. The Celtics are one the teams said to be considering a strong offer to Bulls center Asik. The thinking is it might help them retain Kevin Garnett, who though playing very well at center the second half of the season doesn’t want to return as a center. While it sounds intriguing, just remember [..]
Flip Saunders is "positive" that Kevin Garnett will return to the Boston Celtics
Published on 2012-06-18 11:34:00
Former Timberwolves and Wizards coach Flip Saunders, who spent this postseason as a consultant for Doc Rivers and the Boston Celtics, seems fairly convinced that Kevin Garnett will be back in Boston next season. (Minneapolis Star-Tribune) One reason Rivers brought in Saunders was his great relationship with Kevin Garnett. And Saunders said that KG played like he did with the Wolves in 2003-04, when he was named league MVP. "I remember when we drafted KG [in 1995], we said to him his first year [..]
Bob Ryan says the Celtics want to trade up and draft Harrison Barnes
Published on 2012-06-15 19:00:00
There are a number of issues that I have with this. First off, Harrison Barnes is projected to be drafted in the top five overall. The Boston Celtics currently have picks No. 21 and 22, which if packaged together would get you nowhere near the top five. Secondly, Barnes was a good player at North Carolina. Good, not great or spectacular or downright filthy. He was a good, solid swingman, not a guy I would trade two current draft picks, some future draft picks and maybe a young guy or two for. T [..]
Ryan Hollins looking to return to the Celtics
Published on 2012-06-15 18:28:00
You can now add Ryan Hollins to the long list of players that are looking to come back to the Boston Celtics next season. (CSN New England) Ryan Hollins played less than three months with the Boston Celtics this season. It was more than enough time for him to know he wants to return to the team again. “Of course,” he told CSNNE.com. “I would love to be here next season.” “[They pushed me] incredibly hard,” he said. “It’s not just being hard and yelling -- it’s by example. Brandon Bass will opt out of contract, become free agent
Published on 2012-06-14 23:56:00
In a move that shouldn't have surprised anyone that watched at least seven seconds of Boston Celtics basketball this season, Brandon Bass has decided to opt out of the final year of his contract, which would have been worth $4.25 million, and will become an unrestricted free agent. According to his agent, however, the Celtics are at the top of Bass' wishlist. (CSN New England) "Oh absolutely," his agent Tony Dutt said when asked if Boston was his client's first choice. Ray Allen, Mickael Pietrus have their surgeries

It was announced on Monday that Ray Allen would be getting his arthroscopic surgery done on Wednesday for the bone spurs in his ankle. Wednesday, the Boston Celtics announced that Allen's surgery was completed. They also announced that Mickael Pietrus had arthroscopic surgery done on his knee on Wednesday as well. The Boston Celtics announced today that guard Ray Allen and guard/forward Mickael Pietrus both underwent successful surgery at New England Baptist Hospital this morning. Both surger [..]
Video: Boston Celtics thank their fans
Published on 2012-06-13 12:23:00
The Boston Celtics released this video yesterday, thanking their fans for sticking with them throughout the season. I love and hate these videos. I love them because they're usually very thoughtful, yet cheery at the same time. I hate them because it means the season's over, basketball is still being played and none of the teams currently playing are named the Boston Celtics. I hope you enjoy/cry to this as much as I did.
Greg Stiemsma: "Boston is definitely my No. 1 choice"
Published on 2012-06-12 13:26:00
Celtics center Greg Stiemsma, who spent the last half of the season dealing with a foot injury that limited his minutes, his production and required him to wear a massive walking boot when not playing basketball, will head into free agency this summer. However, he made it no secret that he'd love to be back in Boston next season. (Boston Herald) Stiemsma will be taking a wait-and see approach with everything this summer. “Obviously, I have to do what’s best financially for me and my family [..]
Sam Cassell trying to talk Kevin Garnett out of retiring
Published on 2012-06-11 18:24:00
It appears that Sam Cassell is attempting to make his greatest contribution to the Boston Celtics four years after last playing — or riding the bench — for them. Jackie MacMullan, who just so happens to be one of the greatest writers in the history of writing, wrote a piece today on Doc Rivers and the Celtics moving forward. In it, MacMullan talks a little bit about Kevin Garnett and reveals a little inside information given to her from one of Garnett's closest friends. (ESPN Boston) The [..]
Ray Allen set to have ankle surgery on Wednesday
Published on 2012-06-11 15:28:00
Ray Allen is getting a head start on making himself desirable to teams looking to sign him when free agency begins in July. According to the Boston Herald, Allen will have surgery on Wednesday morning to have the infamous bone spurs removed from his infamous right ankle. The ankle, which has been operated on in the past, gave him issues for the last two and a half months as he missed games, three-pointers and a lot of free throws. Allen found a little extra in reserve over the final six games [..]
Report: San Antonio to recruit Kevin Garnett
Published on 2012-06-11 12:57:00
Fans of the Boston Celtics better be prepared to hear stories like this for the next few months. While we await word of whether or not Kevin Garnett will return for his 18th season, we are already hearing that a team not named the Boston Celtics is interested in his services should he decide to lace up his ANTA kicks next year. The interested team is the San Antonio Spurs. (San Antonio Express-News) The Spurs will consider everything and everyone this summer when free agency begins. But one op [..]
How the 'Big Three' era should be remembered

Before I start, I need to apologize for the long absence. Since I'm currently writing this, it's obvious I'm not dead. I didn't lose interest or my faith in the Celtics or writing. I guess the easiest way to describe it is to say that life got in the way. Just because I wasn't writing about the Celtics didn't mean I wasn't watching every game religiously (some games I watched more than once) and popping aspirins like they were Pez in order to save myself from the heart attacks that this team wo [..]
Celtics clamp down late, take Game 2 87-80
Published on 2012-05-01 21:48:00
No Rajon Rondo? No Ray Allen? Eh, whatever. Paul Pierce turned into the 2002 version of Paul Pierce and carried the Celtics offensively. 36 points, 14 rebounds and one massive, backbreaking shot after another down the stretch more than made up for the Celtics' firepower that was relegated to viewership status. Calling his performance a thing of beauty would be an insult to Pierce's performance. It was heroic, something that you'd expect from one of the greatest players to ever suit up for the g [..]
Mickael Pietrus to start in Game 2; Ray Allen will be a game-time decision
Published on 2012-05-01 12:31:00
Yesterday, I wrote that the best option for the Rondo-less Celtics would be to have Paul Pierce play the point forward and let Bradley and the backup of Doc Rivers' choice play in more off-the-ball scenarios, which wouldn't put a ton of added pressure on them. Apparently, Doc feels that Pietrus' game best suits that scenario. Maybe Doc feels that Pietrus can bring some defensive intensity to the game right out of the gate so that Atlanta doesn't come out like they did on Sunday and shoot lights [..]
What the suspension of Rajon Rondo means for the Boston Celtics
Published on 2012-04-30 18:13:00
In a move that stunned absolutely nobody, it was announced this afternoon that Rajon Rondo will be suspended for Game 2 of the Boston Celtics' first-round series against Atlanta. The loss of Rondo, coupled with the continued questionable status of Ray Allen, makes the already-thin Celtics even thinner. Boston's bench accounted for a grand total of four points in Game 1 and Rondo's absence means that one of those guys that did a whole bunch of nothing last night will now be inserted into the sta [..]
Celtics can't overcome poor start, drop Game 1 to Atlanta; Rajon Rondo ejected
Published on 2012-04-29 21:19:00
I'm not really sure what happened to the Boston Celtics that we saw during the second half of the regular season, but somebody should find them and fly them down to Atlanta. The Celtics found themselves down 15 points in the first quarter and were never able to recover. The Hawks came out of the locker room and were hitting baskets like they were throwing stones in the ocean. Josh Smith had a double-double in the first half and was a factor all night. Jeff Teague was a pest and made some big sh [..]
Doc Rivers calls Ray Allen "probable" for playoff return
Published on 2012-04-27 10:49:00
Ray Allen missed the final nine games of the regular season for the Celtics due to a bothersome ankle. This came after missing six games in March and early April due to, well, a bothersome ankle. There seemed to be some worry about whether or not Allen would see the floor again, but Doc Rivers believes that his sharpshooter will be there. (ESPN Boston) “It’s a concern,’’ Rivers said. “I think he’s probable. Isn’t that what they say in football, when there’s a chance more than 5 [..]
Boston Celtics playoff schedule set for Atlanta series
Published on 2012-04-27 10:07:00
The fourth-seeded Celtics will open their first-round playoff series on the road against the fifth-seeded Atlanta Hawks, mostly due to the fact that the Celtics couldn't have cared less about earning home-court advantage for one round and preferred rest and health over one extra home game. That was clearly evident with the starting lineups that Doc Rivers threw out onto the floor over the last week with the chance of earning home-court still in the balance. Regardless, here's the full schedule f [..]
Ray Allen doubtful to return to the Celtics on Saturday against New Jersey
Published on 2012-04-13 12:25:00
This news comes on the heels of hearing that Allen didn't make the trip to Toronto for tonight's game against the Raptors. Some thought that this might have been Doc Rivers' way of resting some of his veterans during this brutal back-to-back-to-back. Let Ray have the first game off, rest up and throw him out there for a normal back-to-back scenario. That's not the case. Something is definitely wrong with Ray Allen. Allen initially rolled his ankle on March 12 against the Clippers. After playing [..]
Boston Celtics earn a huge win over Miami 115-107
Published on 2012-04-10 21:17:00
The message has officially been sent. The Boston Celtics aren't going anywhere. Two days after shooting 59 percent in their shellacking of Philadelphia, the Celtics went down to Miami and shot 61 percent en route to dropping 115 points on the fifth-best defensive team in the NBA in terms of opposing teams' shooting percentage and sixth-best in scoring defense. Kevin Garnett was a machine and then some, hitting 11 of his 14 shots, making Chris Bosh cower in fear and singlehandedly closing out th [..]
Portland trying to lure Danny Ainge away from Boston?
Published on 2012-03-28 11:09:00
After trading away anyone of substance from their roster at the deadline and firing their coach shortly after, the Portland Trail Blazers have reopened their search for a general manager. I know what you're thinking. Big whoop. Good for them. They're 3,000 miles away. What does that have to do with the Celtics? According to The Oregonian, one person that Portland may be looking to bring in is Celtics general manager Danny Ainge. Is Danny Ainge going to stay in Boston? If not, the Eugene nativ [..]
Mickael Pietrus will remain in hospital overnight
Published on 2012-03-23 22:12:00
I think I can speak for everyone when I say that our thoughts and prayers go out to Mickael Pietrus and we hope that he has a speedy recovery. I'm not sure what's going on with this team, but the serious injuries and medical conditions that the Celtics have had to deal with over the last year or so are just getting freaky at this point. UPDATE: Pietrus will not be admitted to the hospital. Chris Forsberg tweeted that Pietrus has been diagnosed with a concussion. He will still spend the night in [..]
Celtics end road trip with a loss to Philly 99-86, lose Pietrus and Bradley in the process
Published on 2012-03-23 21:58:00
The Boston Celtics lost a lot more than a basketball game in the City of Brotherly Love on Friday night. Mickael Pietrus, who was replacing the inactive Ray Allen in the starting lineup, suffered a scary, mysterious head/neck injury in the second quarter and was taken out of the arena on a stretcher after getting fouled on a drive, landing on his back and having his neck snap back upon impact with the floor. Avery Bradley sprained his ankle later in the second quarter and never returned. Even [..]
Cleveland waives Ryan Hollins; Celtics interested
Published on 2012-03-20 13:27:00
If you haven't noticed, the Boston Celtics desperately need a big man. The good news is that another one has become available. The bad news is that it's Ryan Hollins. The boys over at Red's Army already did some advanced scouting on Hollins and found a massive red flag, thanks to John Hollinger. Hollinger categorizes Hollins as an "amazingly bad rebounder" and notes that last season, Hollins was "outrebounded by every frontcourt player in the league except for Andrea Bargnani and Brian Cardinal [..]
Danny Ainge says the possibility of a trade is "50-50"

With the trade deadline just hours away and numerous rumors hanging over the heads of the Celtics, Danny Ainge said that the possibility of a deal of any kind going down is pretty much up in the air. (ESPN Boston) “I think it’s 50-50, but it may be a small deal,” he said in an interview Thursday morning on Boston sports radio station WEEI. "It may be not as exciting as people may expect. But we’re working hard, we’ll work hard the rest of the day until 3’oclock.” “I have no des [..]
Sources: Celtics "disengaged" from Rajon Rondo trade talks

All of the talk regarding the Boston Celtics trading Rajon Rondo at the trade deadline might finally be able to be put to bed as it appears that Danny Ainge is no longer listening to offers for his All-Star point guard. (CBSSports.com) The Celtics, who according to one rival team had, in fact, been soliciting offers for Rajon Rondo in recent weeks, have disengaged on that front, sources said. One executive compared the Celtics' posture with Rondo to the Pistons' with Rodney Stuckey, whom De [..]
Celtics crush Portland 104-86
Published on 2012-03-09 21:25:00
So now we know that all it takes is an embarrassing, ego-crushing, effortless loss in their previous game for the Boston Celtics to come out and play the game of the year. The final score doesn't do this one justice as the Celtics had it wrapped up by halftime. Everything that Boston did (besides rebounding, because I guess they're immune to that) was crisp, clean and on point. The defense, which forced 28 Portland turnovers, was as suffocating as it's been in a long time, which is saying somet [..]
Doc Rivers not expecting the Celtics to make any trade deadline moves

With the Boston Celtics stuck in a place where they're not really contenders, yet not really cupcakes (a.k.a. Purgatory) it's hard to say whether they're buyers or sellers come the trade deadline. If you ask Doc Rivers, his team is none of the above. (Boston Globe) "I'm sure there will be more rumors; there's nothing you can do about that," Rivers said. "We pretty much know what we want to do. Celtics beaten to a pulp in Philly 103-71
Published on 2012-03-07 21:01:00
Well, that was pathetic. The Celtics took the floor in Philly tonight and had about as much energy as petrified wood. They settled for jump shots — which hit nothing but the front of the rim if they hit anything at all — and resembled Wile E. Coyote whenever the Philadelphia Road Runners took off down the court following the aforementioned missed jumpers. Boston was out-rebounded by 19 on the night, which included being more than doubled up in the rebounding department in the first half. Pa [..]

The Boston Celtics might be the kings of playing games which make you want to throw shoes through your television, chew your fingernails until they bleed and jump up and down on your couch Tom Cruise style simultaneously. A game that was firmly in the Celtics' grasp turned into a double-digit Houston lead in the third quarter, mostly thanks to the Celtics deciding that they no longer felt like playing basketball on this night. Boston then turned Houston's double-digit lead into a "bar fight," m [..]
Boston Celtics "accepting calls" for Ray Allen
Published on 2012-03-06 13:27:00
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Danny Ainge will listen to offers for anyone. That doesn't necessarily mean that he's going to trade anyone and everyone for the sake of making a move, but if someone approaches him with a deal that he feels will make the Celtics a better basketball team then he's going to discuss it. That's the job of a general manager. In regards to Ray Allen, it comes as no surprise that teams are calling about his availability. Yes, he's 36 years old, but Allen mig [..]
The Rajon Rondo roller coaster continues
Published on 2012-03-05 12:50:00
As Rajon Rondo goes, so go the Boston Celtics. That's been the mantra for this team over the past three years. Even with three of the greatest players in the history of the game on the roster, everything has seemed to start and stop with Rondo. If he's pushing the tempo, going strong to the hoop, moving the ball and setting up his teammates, the Celtics normally turn into the well-oiled machine that becomes nearly impossible to stop offensively. If he has checked out mentally and becomes passiv [..]

Celtics crush Nets 107-94

If the Celtics are going to play like that, maybe we should start making up more trade rumors to piss them off even more. Boston played their most complete game since what seems like the Reagan administration, granted it was against New Jersey. They played the type of game that forced Tommy Heinsohn to wipe the drool off of his microphone. They controlled the transition game. They were swarming on defense. Heck, they even broke out the full-court press and forced the Nets into throwing awful pa [..]
Ray Allen inactive tonight against New Jersey
Published on 2012-03-02 17:40:00
The absence of Ray Allen more than likely means and increase in minutes between Avery Bradley, Keyon Dooling and E'Twaun Moore. If this were any other season, I'd say that giving Ray some extra rest now against New Jersey is exactly what you want. With this season playing out the way it is, I'm not so sure that's the case. Hopefully he can recover quickly. They'll need him.
Wojnarowski: Rondo won't be traded for "spare parts"

Yahoo! As always, Woj was downright logical when talking about a possible Rondo deal. (WEEI.com) Wojnarowski said Ainge might be asking teams what they would offer for Rondo in an attempt to determine the guard's trade value going forward, but that's different than actively "shopping" him. Another day, another rumored move that the Boston Celtics are looking into. In the spirit of equal opportunity, Rajon Rondo's name is taking a backseat in this one. Kevin Garnett is now apparently the person of interest. (New York Daily News) With the Big Three’s window now shut, Ainge is trying to land Atlanta’s Josh Smith and other young studs, while offering up Kevin Garnett. However, it appears that the Beasley talks might be starting to grow some legs. Woj also believes that Paul Pierce would be the most likely candidate to get shipped out of town. Wojnarowski points to Pierce's contract — which still has two years and over $30 million left on it after this season — as the reason why he'd [..]
Celtics hang on, beat Cleveland 86-83
Published on 2012-02-28 21:04:00
It appears that the Celtics used the All-Star break to refine their inconsistency and turn it into an art form. Turnovers, 58 points over the final three quarters and the interior strength of tissue paper turned a 16-point first quarter lead into a nip-and-tuck affair up to the final buzzer. To the Celtics' credit, they made the plays when they needed to. The defense stepped up down the stretch, forcing Kyrie Irving to turn the ball over and miss a layup on two separate possessions in the final [..]

Does anyone still watch the Skills Challenge? I mean, seriously. What's the point of this thing? Does dribbling around stationary objects, throwing a ball through a tire and making a layup really prove anything? Is anyone astounded by the "skills" displayed in the Skills Challenge? It's about as relevant as the 2Ball contest was. If you remember 2Ball, you've earned yourself a gold star sticker. Congratulations. Anyway, Rajon Rondo is now in the competition. For the first time in about a week, the Boston Celtics actually showed some heart, resiliency and energy at some point during a real life NBA basketball game. Sure, the heart, resiliency and energy came after they were down by 27 points in the third quarter to Oklahoma City, but beggars can't be choosers, right? Regardless, some would classify Boston's effort on Wednesday night as a "moral victory." Others, like myself, hate to use that term because it takes away from what really happened, whic [..]

The NBA has suspended Rajon Rondo for two games for throwing the basketball at the chest of a referee during Sunday night's loss to Detroit, which also earned him an ejection in the game. As much as I'd love to defend Rondo, I can't. In turn, as much as I'd love to rip the NBA for the punishment, I can't. I understand Rondo was frustrated and pissed off at the world. The Celtics were playing like garbage, the Pistons shot 8 billion free throws and Rondo couldn't buy a call. Chucking the ball at [..]

You'll be waiting a while. The Celtics' season up to this point can be summarized over their last three games. The two remaining members of the Big Three that didn't have hip injuries made a grand total of four field goals between them. They attempted 16 shots. Rajon Rondo played his heart out, scoring a career-high 35 points. Of course, some would say that Rondo sabotaged the game for the rest of the team, scoring a career-high 35 points. Doc Rivers wants the Celtics to pick up the tempo

Ever since I started watching Celtics games, I've heard Tommy Heinsohn say one thing over and over again whenever the C's got the ball off of a miss or a turnover. "Run!" It always seemed quite simple. Get the ball and go. See if you can beat the opponent down the floor and get either a semi-easy hoop or a trip to the foul line. If nothing's there, pull it out and set up the offense. Be aggressive and force the defense to play on their heels. Of course, I always thought that a thing like age [..]
Celtics hold off Chicago 95-91

So what if the Celtics were taking on a Bulls team that was missing last season's MVP? Who cares? Last time I checked, they don't dock your victory if you play a team with their superstar forced to watch from the bench. A win is a win is a win. The Celtics got that win two days after one of the most pathetic performances of the current Big Three era. Boston took the game film from their loss to Toronto, dug a proverbial hole, threw that film into said proverbial hole and moved onto the task at [..]

There are clunkers, and then there are games like the Celtics played on Friday night. Of course, I'm giving the Celtics credit by saying that they actually "played" the Toronto Raptors. I think some more realistic terms would be "walked through," "forgot to attend" and "were in a coma for." I've seen more energy and aggressiveness in mausoleums compared to what Boston had to offer. Doc Rivers knew it as well, throwing about 2,846 different lineup combinations on the floor in the first quarter [..]
Thoughts on Paul Pierce passing Larry Bird on the scoring list

There were plenty of opportunities for Paul Pierce’s moment to be nothing but a figment of our imaginations, for Larry Bird to continue to hold his place at the right hand of John Havlicek on the Boston Celtics’ scoring list for years to come, for the Celtics and their fans to continue to recollect solely on the legends and true lifetime Celtics of the past instead of the one in the present. There were plenty of opportunities for Paul Pierce to take his talents elsewhere. Think about it, no [..]

The evening would belong to Paul Pierce. The rest of the Celtics would make sure that Pierce's evening wouldn't be filled with mixed emotions. After an unimpressive first half that saw Pierce struggle mightily, the Celtics play down to Bobcats and allow Charlotte to feel like they were actually an almost-decent team, the Captain finally completed the task that everyone had been waiting for him to do. The return of Brandon Bass most likely means that JaJuan Johnson will be relegated back to cheerleader duty on the Celtics' bench. Johnson played fairly well in some emergency duty Sunday afternoon, but Bass has been remarkably valuable as Boston's long-awaited scoring threat off the bench and Chris Wilcox has apparently found a time machine, meaning Johnson gets the raw end of the deal.
