New York Comic Con - Are you going?

Published on 2011-08-01 14:30:00

Despite my best efforts, I won't be able to afford New York Comic Con this year. But for those of you who still read and are going to the convention, Random Ramblings could use your help! All we'd need for you to have is a video camera and a willingness to vlog about the convention! By the time that NYCC starts, Random Ramblings TV will have started up (I'm working on the first proper video as I type this up!), and even though I can't be there, I still want an RRTV presence. If you're

A review of "Alphas" [Guest post]

Published on 2011-07-31 16:29:00

I got this post up later than it was intended, which is my fault. Zen (AKA Bryan, a longtime friend of the Random Ramblings site) sent it to me almost 2 weeks ago, but I've only just had time to get it online. Enjoy! This past Monday (7/11/2011) a new show premiered on Syfy called Alphas. Yes, believe it or not, an actual sci-fi show premiered on Syfy instead of another wrestling show. This is an attempt to review it without spoiling it too much for those that still have it on DVR to watc

WTF?! Headlines

-- "Man's penis cut off, put through garbage disposal" -- http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43732006/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/All I can say about this headline is "OW!". I can't even PROCESS that kind of pain, even if I was drugged like the victim in the article. I'm pretty sure that I'd come right back to reality if someone was getting near my man-bits with a 10-inch kitchen knife. If the woman who mangled this man is crazy like that all the time, is it any wonde

Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay

Published on 2011-07-11 09:00:00

I when I first purchased this novel, I didn't realize that it was going to be about the Holocaust. Yes, it dealt with WW2 time period in Europe, but I didn't put 2 and 2 together. I was a little hesitant at first, because of the nature of the book, I thought I was going to bawl my eyes out. This book parallels between 10-year old Sarah in 1942, and Julia Jarmond in 2002, writing about Vel' d'Hiv, the day that French police took away French-Jewsih families to concentration camps. She also has a c

The Rush to 700!

Published on 2011-07-10 13:00:00

August 10th is just a month away, as of today, and with it comes the death of this site's domain name. Maybe it's because of my neuroses, or maybe because an even number just sounds better, but I want the Random Ramblings  blog (to be succeeded by RRTV, as I've mentioned) to go out on a centennial number. After 2+ years, a lot of writers, and a lot of layout changes, we currently stand at 653 posts (counting this one). That leaves us with one month to get 47 posts, and I've already been ge

Right or Wrong? TV season predictions re-examined (part 2)

Published on 2011-05-21 20:55:00

Here we are, for part two. It’s later than I expected it to be, due to work scheduling, overtime hours, and me not making the effort to hunt down some quality wifi and blogging time. In the last post, I was 4-for-4, having guessed correctly about How I Met Your Mother, Chuck, The Event, and Castle. Now, we’ll see how I fared on the other shows.   HAWAII FIVE-0: I WAS RIGHT. For the first time, a CBS series with Alex O’Loughlin in the lead role has done well enough to get a second

Right or Wrong? TV season predictions re-examined (Part 1)

Published on 2011-05-15 22:26:00

It’s been months since I made my predictions about the fates of the shows that I follow, and now it’s time to see how accurate my opinions were. There’s at least one that I’m not too happy about, but there’s obviously nothing that I can do about it. Anyway, here’s the Right Or Wrong verdict as I know it so far!   HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER: I WAS RIGHT. While I might be wrong about the lack of potential stories, and my attitude of “the seventh season will be the last”, I was

A nerdy thought about time travel and Daleks

Published on 2011-05-09 17:02:00

I was watching "Victory of the Daleks" earlier today, and it got me thinking of something that comes to mind more frequently than I should admit: time paradoxes.I've talked on my personal blog (http://www.justin-barlow.com) about my love of time travel paradoxes a little bit, and it's really no surprise that a show BASED on time travel would have them. If they tried to write it without paradox, I don't think they could've done half of the stories that they've wanted

Random Ramblings is back!

Published on 2011-04-25 11:10:00

Or, at least, it’s back for now. It’s been a couple months, and I’m not sure how many of you actually care that it’s back, but it’ll be back for a few more months… but more on that in a few minutes.   Where I’ve been – These past few months have been interesting, and things have changed quite a bit. I’m no longer working at the hotel that I was, and at the time that I type this, I’m not even on the same coast that I was. It’s not a permanent change, as much as I’d

RIP Elisabeth Sladen (1948–2011)

Published on 2011-04-24 16:47:00

Given the number of Random Ramblings writers who are Doctor Who fans, I felt it necessary to take a moment to discuss the recent passing of Who actress Elisabeth Sladen. Fans of the series know her as Sarah Jane Smith, who traveled with the 3rd and 4th incarnations of the Doctor (Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, respectively), reunited with the 10th (David Tennant) in the episode “School Reunion”, and received her own spin-off, The Sarah Jane Adventures, which the 11th Doctor (Matt Smith) appeared
