Lie is an intransitive verb (one that does not take an object), meaning "to recline." Its principal parts are lie (base form), lay (past tense), lain (past participal), and lying (present participle). [Lie meaning "to tell an untruth" uses lied for both the past tense and past participle, with lying as the present participle.] Lay is a transitive verb (one that takes an object), meaning "to put" or "to place." Who was St Patrick? Celebrate St. Patrick's Day. March 17th
Published on 2012-03-17 11:54:00
Who Was Saint Patrick? Even though Saint Patrick the patron saint of Ireland and one of the most celebrated religious figures around the world, the factual information about his life and times is quite vague. Most information about St. Patrick has been twisted, embellished, or simply made up over centuries by storytellers, causing much ambiguity about the real life of St. Patrick. However, there are a some elements of his story about which most scholars accept to be true. According to C [..] > read more

NEEDN'T OR DON'T NEED TO.
Published on 2012-03-14 17:48:00
This is a difficult question because most of the times we can use both of them. 1. Both these forms are used to talk about past events, but there is sometimes a difference in use. When we say that someone needn't have done something, it means that they did it, but it was not necessary. Didn't need to is also sometimes used in this way: You needn't have washed the dishes. I would've put them in the dishwasher. You didn't need to wash the dishes. I would've put them in the dishwasher. But [..] > read more
TO BE WORTH IT (vale la pena)
Published on 2012-03-13 13:07:00
La expresión " To be worth it" es un tanto estraña para el hispano hablante. Significa que merece o vale la pena. Si yo digo : " It is worth it!" vale la pena! Si en cambio digo "it is not worth it" No vale la pena! Para preguntar sería: " Is it woth it?" ¿ merece la pena? Is it worth it to study so hard? ¿Merece la pena estudiar tanto? What is SMALL TALK ?
Published on 2012-03-12 17:18:00
In most English-speaking countries, it is normal and necessary to make "small talk" in certain situations. Small talk is a casual form of conversation that "breaks the ice" or fills an awkward silence between people. Even though you may feel shy using your second language, it is sometimes considered rude to say nothing. Just as there are certain times when small talk is appropriate, there are also certain topics that people often discuss during these moments. HTTP://WWW.MYPLACEFORENGLISH.BLOG [..] > read more

Ambos significan "solamente" en Inglés. y son sinónimos la mayor parte del tiempo pero existen pequeñas diferencias: Just’ and ‘only’ are adverbs that point to or emphasise one part of the clause. In the example , the same meaning is implied in both sentences: I came just to speak with you for a couple of minutes. I came only to speak with you for a couple of minutes. La fórmula sería Had better + verbo sin to: "you'd better study" para dar consejo. Singular nouns that refer to group of people agreement : The Government has or have?
Published on 2011-12-15 17:38:00
The government have (or has?) In English, we often use singular nouns that refer to groups of people (eg government, committee, team) as if they were plural. (This is less true in US English. ) This is because we often think of the group as people, doing things that people do (eating, wanting, feeling etc). In such cases, we use: - plural verb - plural pronoun (they) - who (not which) Here are some examples: - The committee want sandwiches for lunch. They aren't very hungry. - M [..] > read more

AN HORRIBLE OR A HORRIBLE?
Published on 2011-11-07 03:30:00
Frequently I am asked about if it is "a horrible" or "an horrible". Since I'm checking some Halloween essays and I constantly find this mistake. this is the explanation: It's "a horrible" because if you say the word "horrible" out loud, then you realize the h isn't silent. And even if a letter is silent you always say a unless the 1st letter of a word is a vowel. HTTP://WWW.MYPLACEFORENGLISH.BLOGSPOT.COM > read more
