Happy Fatherhood Friday!I hope you had a Happy Halloween!Mom-E and I very much enjoyed ourselves, more so than in years past.Perhaps this is because all small men were eager to ambulate and carrytheir own Trick-or-Treat baskets (at least until the ve

Is that while they're in the bathroom, looking at the walls (instead of where they should be aiming), and they spot the handprint art they made a year ago, they make comments like this:"Dad-E, there's a Yoda in the middle of my hand!""Why yes there is!"Fatherhood is the awesomest job on the planet, light sabers-down.And because I'm nerdy like that.May the force be with you this week, and always,Busy-Dad-E

Let's face it, parenthood isn't all rainbows and unicorns.Interestingly, I think that social media doesn't help this, and in fact, might make things worse. Most people put their "good face" forward, being much much more likely to share news/pics of smiley, happy kids and parents, than things that are negative or maddening frustrating.
10/24/2012 12:23:00 PM
Perhaps one of the best things about kids is their idiosyncrasies. And when you have several children, it's interesting how despite being genetically related, just how different each child is compared to their siblings. This includes not only their likes and dislikes, but also in the ways they show and receive love.Little Brother, for example, is all about "things" when it comes to how he receives love.

Happy Fatherhood Friday everyone! As I was conceptualizing this post, I had this feeling that I was recycling the title of a previous post.

On the way home from Cub Scouts the other night, Big Brother spontaneously blurted out:"Dad-E, iceskating is a compound word.""Yes it is, buddy.""Baseball is a compound word, too.""You got it!""And father.""Huh?""Father.""I know.
10/15/2012 09:59:00 AM
Hello there!I hope you had a nice weekend.Of the myriad of decisions our school-age children make, arguably one's choice of Halloween costume is easily in the annual top 3.With just over 2 weeks to go, I'll admit that Mom-E and I have been running a "stall" offense. You see, about 2 weeks ago, our Transformer-obsessed boys, with Big Brother as their fearless leader, decided that they wanted our WHOLE FAMILY to be a "combiner Transformer" for Trick-or-Treat.A "combiner" is when 5 or 6 individual T [..]

So, to my knowledge, Mom-E has uttered about 3 indecent words in her entire life, and at least two of those were Freudian slips.A favorite family story is that one time as a kid, Mom-E was really upset at Gramm-E.Instead of calling her something straight out of Q-bert "@!#?@!", she mustered a, "You, you, you, you...YOU WRAPPING PAPER!"That's right, if Mom-E calls you wrapping paper, assume that you threw paper, and YOU LOSE!Fast forward to the other day.
10/09/2012 22:34:00 PM
When Mom-E's pink rose breaks off at the top of the stem while Big Brother is carrying it into the house, before we have a chance to give it to her, I saw it as a perfect opportunity for a little "surgery" with black electrical tape (or duct tape, whichever you prefer - the electrical tape was handy). At least now I know Little Brother's tape obsession is a genetic, and it resides on the Y chromosome.(And yes, 2 days later, it's still alive.
10/08/2012 08:07:00 AM
Little Brother may be afraid of cats, but apparently he really likes spiders these days.So much so, that he illustrated a spider picture book (complete with making me fold and cut the pages so that they would be squares). And now, without further ado:The Spider.

Happy Fatherhood Friday!Mom-E had been trying for a couple of days to remember something funny she meant to tell me (you know, all parents have this form of amnesia where if we get distracted when we're about to say something, that thought gets lost, sometimes forever.)She finally remembered last night, and I found it too cute not to share.Faithful readers of the blog know that Little Brother is quite obsessed with ropes (not that any of us have a clue as to why).
10/03/2012 08:40:00 AM
I was delighted that Bill over at ihopeiwinatoaster.blogspot.com bequeathed upon me a Liebster blog award.

So, being 4, Little Brother is all about superheroes and costumes. As you can tell from mask, right now we're all about Power Rangers.I'm sorry, but if "Go go Power Rangers!" has to play in my head all day, then I will re-gift to you. But, upon closer inspection, you might notice some "oddities" about Little Brother's costume. No, he does not have casts on all 4 limbs.

09/24/2012 09:22:00 AM
So the other evening, Mom-E and Dad-E went on a nice little date.We have some good friends with two boys who are the same ages as Big Brother and Bab-E Brother, and the 5 boys enjoy playing together.

Episode IV: A New Fear (Uncool Cats)
09/14/2012 09:33:00 AM
Happy Fatherhood Friday!Lots of young kids have fears about things like monsters, or ghosts, or the dark. But lately Little Brother has been afraid of something else ... cats.Yes, cats.We don't have a cat.And he's not afraid of seeing cats outside, or going somewhere with cats. No, he's actually been afraid about having a dream about cats.Apparently he had some kind of nightmare about cats recently.

And, no, I'm not talking about "label" or "usual".Let's face it, preparation for weekly spelling tests can be a bit tedious (aka it's the third week of school and we're already tired of it.)And I'm only talking about what it's like for parents! No doubt for kids it can be quite arduous, too. This week, we were practicing words on Thursday afternoon for the Friday test.Big Brother missed about 5 of the 15 words (in part because he was preoccupied with his Trio blocks). But when we said we were going [..]

Happy Fatherhood Friday! The other evening, out of the blue, Big Brother decided to help me make dinner.Little Brother is often Mom-E's helper in the kitchen (particularly if it involves anything chocolate). But this was the first time Big Brother extensively assisted with dinner. His first request was that we make corn muffins.
08/22/2012 10:02:00 AM
The other night I peeked into Bab-E Brother's room, and found him fast asleep in the following position:I wasn't sure whether to laugh hysterically, or be mortified, so I did both.(And while I was immobilized by the humor/horror, Mom-E quickly removed his hand and he promptly rolled onto his belly.)Happy (Almost) Wordless Wednesday,Busy-Dad-E

Little Brother has a penchant for a number of things - coins, tiny plastic toys, blankets, ropes, even latex gloves (which, by the way, he now stores in an M&M Mini's container that I once used to store quarters). But I digress. One of Little Brother's favorite pastimes is afternoon hot chocolate. It could be 3000 degrees outside, and the boy will still want hot chocolate. And, invariably, he has to put something in it (besides the marshmallows, of course).Perhaps the "mint" gene is X-linked, becaus [..]

When Bab-E Brother went to sleep, he was squarely in bed, head on a pillow and snuggled up with his "wubbie" burp towels and favorite stuffed animals. When I came in his room to check on him in the morning, I found him like this: passed out on the floor, two feet from his bed, towel wrapped around his head.Let's face it, if I woke up to find Mom-E on the floor like this, I'd worry that something was seriously wrong. But when we're talking about our children, we know it's because they're just plain [..]

We've long been Thomas the Tank Engine fans.At some point, each of our boys has been completely obsessed with Thomas (currently Bab-E Brother), and they all still like to play with the toys.
07/22/2012 21:36:00 PM
I have new artwork for my office! This is an original Mom-E.The boys love to draw pictures for my office, and I treasure their artwork.

And I cannot lie.No Bab-E Brother can deny.Oh, wait.

So just 3 weeks ago, we pulled up the remnants of the corn and squash plants, and Mom-E planted what was left of the seed packets.(Before)Granted, we've had some monsoon-level rains recently, but the results have been amazing.Just like the new and advanced Terminator from Terminator 2, apparently this second round of seeds got the Nintendo "cheat codes" for how to grow really fast. Perhaps they are a new race of cyborg plants called Germinators?Either way, it's exciting to see the next round of [..]

This is our playroom table. As I was watching the boys battle Beyblades on that table tonight, I was (admittedly strangely) reminiscing about it.We bought that table about 9 years ago at Target, just after Mom-E and I were married.

Happy Fatherhood Friday! So, Little Brother and Bab-E Brother have really been bit by the "big boy bug" this week.Bab-E Brother has started spontaneously talking about wanting to wear big boy underwear.Wanting to attempt to capitalize on his interest (and NOT AT ALL swayed by the dream
07/11/2012 11:14:00 AM
The boys decided to take the "blue pill".****So Big Brother and Little Brother (and Bab-E Brother, by indirect extension) have been (blissfully unaware that they are) in "The Matrix" for the past few weeks. You see, things kinda came to a head this summer, between 3 boys at home (all day) with different schedules and the same Type A temperament and the heat (amongst others), things were not going well behavior-wise.
07/09/2012 07:22:00 AM
So the boys really like waffles, although admitted as of late they prefer Eggo to homemade. And I'm willing to admit that the homemade ones definitely come out of the waffle maker a hair on the dry side. The other day, I had this mad scientist idea to cross waffles with one of the boys' other favorites - muffins.Basically, I made waffle batter, but instead of the waffle maker, I just poured it into a muffin pan and maked baked waffle muffins, or "wuffins" as I've dubbed them. And, surprisingly, the [..]

This past week, Big Brother and Little Brother have been all about building forts, and IMO, they've done a pretty cool job, as evidenced by the picture above. In making their Deluxe Fort for two, the boys were sure to include some practical amenities. In particular, Little Brother, being the Sanitation Engineer at our house (if he goes potty right before bathtime, he has to wash his hands in the sink - absolutely refuses to just wash them in the tub), wanted to keep the fort clean. And so, on the b [..]

Happy Fatherhood Friday! So from time to time, Little Brother has this weird "issue" in the bathroom. He gets a very anxious look and starts screaming for me."Dad-E, I'm dripping!"And we're not talking about any excretions. In fact, I'm not sure what he's talking about.Of course, the first time he screamed this, I was pretty worried about what was going on.
05/30/2012 08:56:00 AM
This week's garden photos brought to you by Grampap-E and the letter "S".Sometimes I think that the garden has turned into a crowd of parents jockeying for position at 5am in front of Toys R Us because Christmas is 3 days away and there's one Tickle Me Elmo left. The cucumber plants are bullies.

On Memorial Day, we pause to show respect and to remember all those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, at home and abroad.Thank you for giving me the freedom to enjoy my family.Today, and everyday.Have a great week,May God Bless America,Busy-Dad-E

The other morning, Mom-E walked into Bab-E Brother's room to find him talking away to all of his animal friends. He had each one snuggled up warmly with their own burp towel.Unfortunately for Barney, he was being slightly suffocated by his blanket.Fortunately, Bab-E Brother has plenty of time to continue honing his Dad-E skills, but he's off to a great start.Have a good weekend,Busy-Dad-E

On the downside, we've been battling some pesky Japanese beetles, who have a penchant for corn. The cucumbers are also not playing very nice with the other vegetables, literally trying to strangle their neighbors in an attempt to usurp more garden space. But on the upside, we've started to harvest a teeny little bit.

Happy Fatherhood Friday! The boys and I have invented a new game, called Beach SwingBall".Lately, we've been spending some time after dinner outside on the swing set.Similar to the picture below, we have three swings, so that the boys can all swing simultaneously.Big Brother has a "regular" swing, and the other two boys have a "bucket"/child's swing. You can imagine the fun and chaos of trying to assist 3 boys simultaneously in such an endeavor. It feels like one of those jugglers who spins plates [..]

You may remember that I recently dished on Big Brother's end of the year prize for good behavior.Well, last Saturday we did some window shopping at Target, and Big Brother came across this toy.All 3 boys like to play with Bey Blades, and Big Brother and Little Brother's favorite Saturday cartoon is Bey Blade: Metal Masters. And last week's episode featured two of the Beys in this set.(As an aside, in the show Team Star Breaker, the American Team, is about to battle Team Gan Gan Galaxy, the Japane [..]

What do you get when you have a 7 year old who protests vehemently about his accelerated reading program books and asks every day "how many more days of school are left?", a 4 year old who likes to dress up in superhero costumes and run around the backyard trying to catch a bird with a miniature butterfly net (and insisting that he can and will catch one), and a 2 year old whose new favorite pastime during his nap is to tear pages of books into shreds?A: Spring fever (although we also would've a [..]

No, this is not a post about Little Brother running around the house naked (though it could've been). It happens to them all. After almost 2 years, Big Brother's streak met it's end yesterday. He came home with a "yellow" for his behavior, after about 340 consecutive days of "green".The behavior system at his school works like a stoplight: green = good, yellow = caution, and red = bad.

Hi there! I hope you had a relaxing weekend. While we were busy relaxing, our garden was busy growing. Here's an updated look:Just look at the difference a week makes:And to think that in 2 more weeks, we're going to hit the garden with another round of fertilizer! Now all we need is for some actual vegetables to start growing. Okay, so Mom-E and I actually saw this movie while she was resting up for the Boston Marathon (we havent read the book), but I came up with this title before seeing the film.My thinking is the best way to put the odds in your favor, is to STACK THE DECK.While I havent read the Hunger Games, I am reading a book called The 5 Love Languages of Children. Another week, and another garden picture. Im sure once we get to harvest, it will be neat to go back review these pictures in rapid fire succession to see the dramatic change.I can honestly say in my 3+ years of blogging, that Ive never given commentary on vegetables before, but hey, why not.Overall, were quite pleased and excited with the growth. So now that Big Brother and Little Brother are sharing a room, Mom-E and I decided that it was time for some redecorating.Given the boys' indecisiveness when we discussed possibile themes, we figured that casting a broad net with "superheroes" might be a good way to go.So far so good.Being blessed with some creative juices and do-it-yourself desire (sometimes to the point of frustration), Mom-E and I embarked on making some superhero wall hangings. For 3 nights in a row, we had a little "paint an [..]

Watch our garden evolve: Week 0, 1, 2, 3You may notice a large plant of chives that wasn't there last week. The chives are the one thing that haven't done so well. So we opted to just buy some potted chives and "transplant" them into the garden.Although you can't tell from the picture, it appears that some caterpillars are attempting to fatten up on the fruits of our labor.TO THOSE CATERPILLARS, THIS MESSAGE IS FOR YOU: If you eat the leaves of our veggie plants, you goin' down!Have a good week, [..]

I hope you had a Happy Easter!*****So the other weekend, Big Brother was invited to a roller skating party, his first time roller skating.I'll admit that I was slightly apprehensive, given our experience a while back with ice skating.(We haven't been ice skating again since.)But, to my pleasant surprise, things went quite well. When I was building our garden, I managed to substitute my fingernail for a regular nail with the hammer, which left the mark shown below. And let me tell you did it smart. I can't remember the last time I'd had the same degree of physical pain.Fortunately, with the help of ice and about an hour, although still quite tender for a few days, I was able to go finish building the garden. But this Easter season, my finger is a powerful reminder of how infinitessimally minor my pain and suffering was co [..]

So after a several-month battle with Little Brother spending most nights sleeping on the floor of Big Brother's room, we opted for compromise:Big Brother was okay with sharing sleeping quarters with Little Brothers more permanently, so we bought Little Brother a bed to match Big Brother's. And so now they both sleep in one room, and the "other" room is more play space (and houses Little Brother's clothes.)Fortunately, Little Brother has been more than enthusiastic about sleeping in his new bed [..]

All I can say is "wow". Mom-E and I are bucking our track records with green things. The garden continues to grow (compare to last week), despite an attack from an hour-long torrential storm (colored in the yellow-orange range per Weather Channel). And it continues to garner the excitement of the boys. Here it is:Have a good week,Busy-Dad-E

Little Brother has a new figure drawing to share. It's interesting to compare this to one he made about 5 months ago.I like this one, especially given that he drew it on a napkin. The lines are a little crisper. There are some new parts - a tongue and either horns or ears. And, of, course, the letter B for Busy-Dad-E! (Which, incidentally Little Brother likes to call the letter B "Bubble Bubble", because that's what Mom-E explained when she showed him how to write it (you make a line, and then go [..]

Well, 2 weeks into things and the garden is still going strong! What a difference one week makes! The garden has survived some pretty torrential rains. And it also survived a sneak attack from either Pupp-E, another animal, or possibly the rain itself that took out a corn plant and perhaps some others. To play it safe, we've installed a little plastic fence around things. The boys are having a lot of fun with the garden. It's definitely a highlight of everyone's day to go look at the garden and water [..]

One of the best things about homework (besides the learning value stuff), is that it makes for great blog material. This assignment read, "I get the grouchies when..."Big Brother's reply was "...when I yell at my mom she gets mad."Duh!But apparently he "calms down" by first stopping to think (left panel), and then continuing to yell at her (right panel)? It was a toss-up for me, but Mom-E thought her "relaxing evil eyebrows" were funnier than who- or what-ever took a bite out of her hair.Have a go [..]

It enhances their flavor potential."If the same holds true for garden vegetables, then we may have some tasty treats in a few weeks.Although the garden has been blessed with direct sunlight and some rain, it has also been subjugated to a few footsteps from a 2 year-old, dirty paws from Pupp-E, a [..]

Mom-E and I have always tried to foster open lines of communication with the boys. And they definitely talk to us (even if sometimes we wish they'd hold their tongues).*Deep breaths. Count to 10. More deep breaths. Visualize relaxing peacefully at the beach with a margarita. In each hand. Visualize.*Of course, we want to continue to encourage them to talk to us.But sometimes we need less "yackin" and more "doin".Because if left to their own devices, sometimes it takes 10 minutes just to pick [..]

Sure, you're probably thinking this post is about Big Brother, Little Brother, and Bab-E Brother (or a quite funny, albeit slightly lesser-known film starring Steve Martin/Chevy Chase/Martin Short). And while it very easily could be, today that's not the case. No, I'm talking about Bab-E Brother's Three Amigos and their trusty steeds. His Three Amigos are his 3 favorite stuffed animals - "B" (teddy bear), "Mr. Donkey" (who is actually a triceratops), and "Barney" (played by the purple dinosaur hims [..]

So this year we planted our first raised garden in our "new" home.Albeit a little amateurish, I built the garden frame myself (and managed to get a good smash on one of my fingers with a hammer). Bab-E Brother "helped" me build the frame, and Little and Big Brother helped me fill it with topsoil. We've started out with a 5ft x 8ft plot, and have planted corn, cucumbers, yellow squash, green bell peppers, green onions, chives, and carrots. No doubt, the boys will wake up each morning and have to in [..]

What, you may ask, is Clinophobia? It's fear of beds. And Mom-E and I are afraid (pun-intended) that Little Brother has it.For some time now, for better or worse, we've let Little Brother sleep in Big Brother's room. They don't disturb each other, both seem to get good rest (without having to leave the lights on), and it beats uninterrupted screams from Little Brother that keep the entire household awake. But the downside for Little Brother is that he's slept on Big Brother's floor.Mom-E and I have [..]

Have you ever had a day...Where you go with your Dad-E to pick up your Big Brother from Sunday School...And have to go potty...really bad...And make it to the potty just fine and in time...But when you do "go", everything kinda goes in the wrong direction...Soaking your underwear and pants...And you want to go naked from the waist down...But your Dad-E won't let you because you're in a building packed with adults and children...So you pull up your cotton "swimming pool" and your Dad-E carries yo [..]

So the other night I went into Big Brother's room to find him in this position.Apparently he made this "pit stop" on the way back from the bathroom to his bed (way to go Big Brother on waking up and going potty yourself). We're not sure if he was praying or just passed out in a fetal position. You decide.Have a good week,Busy-Dad-E

So recently Big Brother has been obsessed with "accounting."Probably two things have inspired his renewed interest in money: not long ago he got to pick out a toy with his Christmas money, and he's been doing a big unit on money at school. He also found a stack of old play money that has been the focal point of his obsession. The other night, I went to check on him, hearing a noise from his room at about 10pm. There he was, sitting up in bed, sorting stacks and stacks of play bills."Look, Dad-E, [..]

Not quite what you think...***Sure, there are some days when Mom-E and I definitely need enjoy a glass of wine after the kids go to bed.But the other day, we couldn't help but wonder if WE did anything to drive Bab-E Brother to "drink."At breakfast time, Mom-E caught him dipping his hand in the clean/unused toilet and licking it like it was Fun-Dip.When lunch rolled around, Mom-E observed that he was doing "shots" of honey straight from the bottle. And at dinner, what better way to unwind after a [..]

This is what happens when you let a 7 year-old play with the foam letters in the bath tub.Man, did he think that was hilarious.I guess the question that remains would be is this the name for Big Brother's1. New sushi-ribs fushion cuisine restaurant2. Pickin' bluegrass band3. Clothing store for farmers4. Latest book obsessionYou decide. Have a good week,Busy-Dad-E

Happy Fatherhood Friday!I hope I didn't mislead you with the title - nobody at our house is puking, currently or recently.****With 3 boys ages 2, 4, and 7, you can imagine that we have a lot of dirty fingers/feet/faces, pee dribbles on and around toilets, unflushed "presents", and a stinky Diaper Champ at our house. And we do.But we also have Little Brother.Little Brother is our very own "reminderphile" (i.e., he LOVES to remind people about things.)Seriously, he's better than your smart phone c [..]

Let's face it ... parenthood is great fun, but it's also pretty darn trying and exhausting all the time at times. At least at our house, there's a never-ending train of laundry to do and fold, dishes to wash, dry, and put away, lunches to pack, diapers to haul out to the dumpster, pee stains to clean around the toilets (what else would you suspect from 3 small boys with prototypical "aim"), etc. And that's just the fun that begins AFTER the boys go to bed. Let's not get started with all of the [..]

So we had a few firsts this weekend.Big Brother saw his first Star Wars film. And both he and I saw our first movie in 3D (it surprised me when I realized that I hadn't seen any 3D films before).Big Brother has had, to this point, a more "peripheral" interest in Star Wars. Mostly I think because we haven't really "talked it up" than anything else. But he could recognize some of the characters, including Yoda and Darth Vader. And I'll admit that the idea to go see the movie was mine (of course kn [..]
