Misconceptions: Pt I
Published on 2012-02-10 10:59:00
One of my favorite hobbies is to read the news on NPR. I like to read all the articles, and then go down and read the comments. When you read the comments you see the foolishness of both sides. At times, the article is faith related, and then both sides really come out swinging. In the midst of the name-calling (both sides) and sarcasm, I sometimes see misconceptions about God posted there, and I thought it would be worth confronting some of those misconceptions.Misconception: If God loves us so
The Weeping Prophet

As I study the book of Jeremiah I consider the words that he spoke for the Lord to the people of Judah. He spoke of betrayal and a denial of their God. He spoke of a people who turned from God and embraced their sin. They cherished a life away from God and considered their sin to be a miniscule annoyance to God that should be overlooked. They searched for material gain and honored it above God.In return for their disregard and disdain for their covenant with God, they were subject to judgmen
My Star

At this time of year, we all remember the story of Jesus Christ. We remember how a young girl gave birth to our savior in a manger, surrounded by farm animals. We hear about the shepherds who saw the star, and were told by angels that a king had been born. We consider the Wise Men who followed the star from the east, and it led them to Jesus. A few years ago, a pastor taught that all people have a star. We weren’t there that night to follow the star in the sky, but God puts people in our l
A Birthday

Nearly eight years ago, my daughter was born. After a full night of labor I held that beautiful little piece of perfection and marveled. She was so glorious, and when I looked at that little face, I could finally appreciate how much God loved me. It was a perfect gift to a lost child. On that day, I prayed for my child. I looked at her face and I prayed everything for her. I prayed that her heart never be broken. I prayed that she would never get serious
ME version 2.0

Years ago, AOL was the biggest Internet service provider. We paid for the privilege to login to the Internet and get our email. We all remember the tell tale sound of, “You’ve Got Mail!” It sounded so nice. Then they would improve, and it would be all new features. Each version was better than the last. There was an AOL version 9.0 the last time I checked. So it goes with all different kinds of software. I guess as a geek, I can relate to that idea. Each version comes out better t

A famous television evangelist once stated that Jesus wasn't the only way to heaven. That make's no sense at all. Let's take an inventory of somethings that we as Christians can believe as true. If you are a Christian you believe... 1. in God as being the all-powerful creator of the universe.2. Jesus is God.3. Jesus (God) suffered, was crucified, died, and was resurrected for the redemption of all sins for all humankind. When dealing with a Christian
The Light

This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shineA couple of weeks ago I attended a spiritual gifts course and discovered my areas of spiritual gifts. I met with a pastor and we discussed ways to apply those gifts in service to the body of Christ. We came up with a couple of options, but to be honest, I wasn’t sure. I seemed inadequate to perform any of those tasks. However, I decided to put myself out there to be used by God for his purpose. The next weekend I walked into the children’
A Big Flashlight

When I first became a Christian I remember rushing to a store and buying a Bible at the very first chance. I had just had a one on one encounter with my savior and I needed to start knowing His Word immediately. I didn’t know anything about Bibles or different types. I picked one up at Wal-mart that met two criteria: it had a pretty cover and it was cheap. After securing my Bible I went home and started reading on page 1.I was stunned by what I discovered. The people in the Bible were just

This summer I took a camping trip to Sequoia National Park. Although the temperatures in the rest of the state were in triple digits, at our campground the nightly temperatures were in the 40s. In the mornings, we would get up in sweaters and jeans while fixing breakfast. On the last day of our trip, I decided to get up early and surprise my daughter with a nice hot breakfast of grits and hot chocolate. As I ventured out into the frosty morning, I felt warm with the idea of her delight. I c
Dudley Do-Right

Years ago there used to be a show about a hero, Dudley Do-Right. He would always do the right thing, and rush in to save the day. He was always there to save the damsel in distress. Since then our entertainment has been brought by other righteous heroes, and we feel good about it. These heroes stand up for what is right, and allow us to believe that there are good people. But are there any real heroes? Are there any really good people? First, let’s figure out what “Good” is?
