Understanding the Cloud for Photographers
Published on 2012-05-20 01:43:00
Cloud computing is the future. The term “the cloud” sounds unfamiliar to most people even though they are engaged with the system much of the time they are on their computer. All Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr users are using the cloud; more specifically, everything online--webpages, images, text, and links--is considered to be “in the cloud.” In other words, you probably access the cloud every day. What does cloud computing mean to photographers of all levels? The access to applications a [..] > read more

Art of Photography

Row of tables, each with a rose in a bottle. The art of photography involves finding a scene that is asthetically pleasing. When you're on the street, look for tastefully decorated, clean scenes that have an interesting balance of color and/or symmetry. One element that many art photos have is minimalism, or just a few focused objects placed creatively either using repetition or an object or objects placed in a lighted area of the scene (see the book, "The Art of Photography" in the link above).Yo [..] > read more
How to Crop a Picture

Beach photo before cropping.Beach photo after croppingHere's an interesting photo situation that illustrates how to crop a picture. I shot this beach photo, framing it so that the deckchair and umbrella are the focus of the shot. When I saw the image on my viewfinder, it looked fine.I got home and found out the main subject was soft, but the background was sharp. My camera's focus points ended up being set on the boats.I got an idea about how to crop the image. I thought that since the boats in [..] > read more

New Types of Lenses

Engineers, scientists, and small companies are using different liquids to make tiny lenses for cell-phone cameras. Unique imaging technologies are being used with these lenses in a race for the tiniest, fastest camera that needs minimal amounts of power. ScienceDaily reported in 2008 that miniature lenses can be created by the power of “water, sound and surface tension." The process begins when the sound oscillates a pair of water droplets. Photo to Digital: Opt for not using any special scanner options.Converting a film photo to digital is a task just about anyone can do, but there are a few tricks to the trade:1. If you're converting a photo to digital using a scanner and it's an old negative, don't use Digital Ice or Dust Removal options. You'll get too much noise.2. How's this for following the Rule of Thirds, not to mention color used to present a compelling story.Obviously the bag is too big for the girl, which is what makes this photo amusing.Another factor to consider is that the child has plenty of room in front of her--two-thirds of the frame--which leaves her room for walking. If she were two-thirds into the frame, it would be awkward.
