Life... But How To Live It? - Self-titled LP
Published on 2011-12-24 10:40:14
It is my holiday break from school and it feels weird to suddenly have time on my hands. It's hard to escape this awareness that I am just going through the motions again this holiday season. Sometimes I feel like screaming and breaking things. How amusing that I still haven't "grown up". I thought with time I would feel less alienated from the people in my life. Calling long distance relatives I haven't spoken to in a year to speak to them for five minutes sure is ridiculous. How can I condense
Elliot Goldenthal - Pet Sematary (1989)
Published on 2011-10-28 23:10:15
This is the score for the oppressively sad 1989 horror film, inspired by the Stephen King novel of the same name. I honestly have not heard much other work by composer Elliot Goldenthal, but I'll probably look for some more after just revisiting this score. I know that, like my last two posts, this score is all over the internet. Just call this an upgrade because it is in 320 kbps. The main theme here has surely invoked comparisons to The Amityville Horror, as will just about any horror score th
Various Artists - The Exorcist (1973)
Published on 2011-10-26 18:48:21
It is the time of year when many people go searching the internet for scary music for their parties or their own amusement. Undoubtedly there are thousands typing "the exorcist soundtrack" or "the shining soundtrack" into G00gle. It's understandable. The pieces of music used in William Friedkin's 1973 religious horror staple were well chosen. Penderecki pieces dominate this collection. It's always safe to go with Penderecki if you want to frighten your audience or generally instill a feeling of
Bernard Herrmann - Psycho (1975 re-recording)
Published on 2011-10-22 13:31:13
Sometimes I feel like going psycho. It's been one of those semesters for me. Although it has not been possible to spoil you kind readers as you were last year for the Halloween Countdown, I still have a couple treats in store that I hope you enjoy. During the Halloween Countdown of 2008, Zer0_II posted the score for 1960's Psycho and mentioned in his post that there was a re-recording conducted by the maestro himself in 1975. Rejoice in morbid glee for today, you get that re-recording of this h
Guts Pie Earshot - Distorted Wonderland (1997)
Published on 2011-08-04 15:31:45
Guts Pie Earshot was formed in 1991 as an experimental noise-punk ensemble in Cologne, Germany. They are associated with the DIY and squatter punk communities and often play at tiny venues with a more intimate setting. They released two LPs with singer a.Punkt, her voice adding even more to their unusual sound, before GPE became the drum-n-cello instrumental duo that they remain today. The first LP, Distorted Wonderland, I sought for some time before finally I found a copy in decent condition. Th
Counterblast - Balance of Pain (1996)
Published on 2011-08-01 15:04:23
Counterblast hail from Sweden with their brand of overwhelming, apocalyptic crust/sludge metal. They are often compared to the likes of Dystopia, mid-era Neurosis, and Amebix. This is probably because of the thick, surreal atmosphere they create by the addition of samples, synths, cello, and even some arresting female wailing on the intro.Balance of Pain is their first album. There are two more, Impassivity from 2002 and a new one, Nothingness, out this year. I decided to revisit this long out o
Grimple / Logical Nonsense - A Darker Shade of Grey (split LP, 1994)
Published on 2011-07-27 14:29:51
Continuing on my trip down memory lane, today I present one of my favorite split LPs of all time. I first heard Oakland, California's Grimple when I visited my cousin in Arizona back in the mid-90s and I returned home with a cassette dub of a cassette dub of a cassette dub of Grimple's first LP entitled "Up Your Ass". The sound quality was heinous, but it was fuckin' punk rock. When I stumbled upon this split LP in a Cincinnati record shop I nearly pissed. Upon listening I was a little put off b
GBH - From Here To Reality (1990)
Published on 2011-07-23 17:31:16
GBH is: a) great big hairdosb) greasy butt holesc) grievous bodily harmd) a punk band formed in 1978 in Birmingham, Englande) all of the aboveI've heard GBH fans talk down about this LP saying things like "they went too metal", "the production sucks", or "they overdid the double bass pedal". I respond with "if you're gonna complain about something, how about that lame cover art - that is just sad next to the cover art for their previous five studio LPs". For these ears, the album has always rock
Clinging To The Trees Of A Forest Fire/Nesseria Split (2011 - 320kbps)
Published on 2011-07-21 02:37:32
Though these are two different bands, they have one thing in common and that's a rumbling groove that permeates a good deal of their songs. That aside, Clinging To The Trees of A Forest Fire is more sludge inclined while Nesseria is more on the hardcore/crust/grindcore side. In short the former is slower and dirtier while the latter is faster and more violent. This is how each band is described on the bandcamp page for the split: CLINGING TO THE TREES OF A FOREST FIRE are without a doubt o
Death Side - Wasted Dream (1989)
Published on 2011-07-19 12:52:42
Death Side are old school Japanese hardcore of the so-called "Burning Spirits" variety, which is a live show series that has been running for over twenty years at a Tokyo club. Speed and over-the-top riffmania saturate this amazing and relentless record. This stuff continues to influence so many bands. No wonder. After I first heard Death Side, I was addicted to them for months and I always come back for another fix eventually.Trying to find Death Side albums outside of Japanese record stores is
