Battlestar Galactica Papercraft: Colonial Viper Mk I

Published on Thu, 04 Feb 2010 11:00:00

Papercraft designer Ninjatoes recently released a Colonial Viper Mark II model, but before the Mark II there was the Viper Mark I which appeared in the original Battlestar Galactica television series that aired in the late 70's. This papercraft Mark I is a rework by Fred Smith of a Viper template from a Japanese website. Fred has done a great job giving the Viper a weathered look and he also has designed a launch rail on which to display the starfighter. Fred's templates are available for downl read more..

Prototype Soviet Spacecraft Paper Models

Published on Tue, 02 Feb 2010 17:50:00

The former Soviet Union developed numerous spacecraft for space exploration, but most of these vehicles were never put into service. Two paper model examples of these prototype Soviet spacecraft are pictured above. On the left is the LEK Lunar Lander which was developed in the late 70's. It was intended to function in the same way as the US Apollo Lunar Module. On the right is the Buran Orbiter, a rival of the US Space Shuttle. After one unmanned flight in 1988, the Buran project was abandoned read more..

Maserati Race Car Papercraft

Published on Mon, 01 Feb 2010 00:33:00

The Maserati 250F was the car that Juan Manuel Fangio drove to victory in the 1957 World Championship. This paper model of the race car was created by Grand Prix enthusiast Paul Cheard using Adobe Illustrator. Cheard estimates that the ten piece model takes about 3 to 4 hours to build. A free download of the template is available here. read more..

Simple Sea Serpent Papercraft

Published on Wed, 27 Jan 2010 05:08:00

Sometimes simple papercraft can be the most fun to build. This paper toy sea serpent by artist Laura Schlipf gets my vote in the fun-to-build category. Despite being Laura's first papercraft design, she has added some creative touches like including an extra page of "humps" in the template which may be printed out as many times as desired to make (as she puts it) a serpent that is "reeeally long". The three pages of the template may be found here, here, and here.Related Papercraft:Loch Ness Mons read more..

Star Wars Papercraft: X-Wing Starfighter

Published on Fri, 22 Jan 2010 20:58:00

There are quite a few different papercraft models out there of the X-Wing starfighter from the Star Wars movies, but what sets this one apart is its cartoonish looks which I find kind of cute for some reason. This model is the creation of Al MacDonald who does the online comic "Diary of a Crazed Mimbanite". The style of the X-Wing somewhat matches the style of the online comic. Al has also created a TIE fighter to go along with the X-Wing. Both templates may be downloaded here. read more..

Alan Moore Paper Toys

Published on Tue, 19 Jan 2010 17:48:00

Alan Moore is the UK comic book writer who brought us Watchmen, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and V for Vendetta. Despite his excellent writing abilities, I always thought Moore's looks were a little creepy. These paper toys turn up the creep factor a notch by adding glowing red eyes to the mix. Both these toys are available from Mustard comedy magazine as part of their paper toy series of celebrities who have appeared on the cover of the magazine. A download the PDF templates is here. read more..

Hover Tank Paper Models

Published on Sun, 17 Jan 2010 21:54:00

These hover tank paper models were intended to be used with science fiction themed tabletop wargaming, but I think they are they are kinda cute in and of themselves. Since the scale of the models is 15mm (1:120), the template for one tank is small enough to fit on a single sheet of paper. Each of these tanks was designed by UK miniature gamer Jermey Claridge and may be download from his website here. There are three other tank models available in addition to the three pictured above. Also, each read more..

Power Ranger Papercraft: Morpher Belt Buckle

Published on Thu, 14 Jan 2010 22:52:00

It has been a very, very long time since I have watched an episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but I do remember the power morpher belt buckles they had with the dino power coins. "It's morphin time! Mastodon!" A member of the Rangerboard forum known as "TheGreenRanger" has created this papercraft version of the dino buckler morpher. The template for the buckler includes all six dino coins so you can build whatever version you wish. The five parts of the template are here: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Th read more..

Half-Life Papercraft: Headcrab Zombie Mask

Published on Wed, 13 Jan 2010 05:42:00

I consider this papercraft project something of a failed experiment, but I thought I would post it anyway just in case someone else might be able to do something with it. My original goal was to take a 3D model of a headcrab zombie from the Half-Life video game and turn the zombie's head into a full size hollow paper model that could be worn as a mask. Well, that was a nice idea, but after I did a test build it became apparent that the thing was a little too strangely shaped to work well as a m read more..

Vehicle Papercraft: Morris Commercial Light Van

Published on Sun, 10 Jan 2010 14:49:00

UK paper model designer Pete Watson has a passion for British road and rail transport models. His website offers dozens of 00 scale trams, buses and commercial vehicle models. One of the free models he offers is this Morris Commercial Light Van. The time period for this delivery van is not mentioned, but my guess is that it was used in the 1950's. A download of the van template is available here. read more..

Iron Man Helmet Paper Model

Published on Thu, 07 Jan 2010 22:00:00

The 2008 Iron Man movie has inspired a lot of great papercraft and here is another one to add to the list. This full size Iron Man helmet was created by a Texas papercrafter known online only as "DungBeetle". In addition to this movie accurate helmet, DungBeetle is also working on some 1:1 scale armor, but as of yet the helmet is the only piece to which color has been added. A free download of the helmet template (Pepakura PDO format only) is available here. read more..

Cute Paper Dice Birds

Published on Mon, 04 Jan 2010 11:00:00

These cute papercraft birds may not look like dice at first glance, but in the lower right corner of each face there is a small number. The bird dice come complete with a nifty carrying case with a hinged lid. The templates for these are available here at a Japanese website called "Mongo Village". If I knew Japanese I could tell you more, but it appears these birds are characters that live on an imaginary island. read more..

Star Wars Papercraft: Darth D2

Published on Sat, 02 Jan 2010 06:24:00

What do you get when you cross the Star Wars characters Darth Maul and R2 D2? Uh... Darth D2? It is perhaps not the best designed R2 unit papercraft around, but the idea behind it is pretty amusing nonetheless. Kim Lang, who designed this Sith droid in 2009 also designed a normal R2D2 papercraft to be its companion. Both templates may be found here on Lang's website, 365characters.net. Lang's goal in starting 365characters was to create one fictional character or creature every day for a year. T read more..

Tron 2.0 Papercraft: Lightcyclist Bust

Published on Thu, 31 Dec 2009 04:30:00

The first papercraft I posted in 2009 was a Tron papercraft, so I suppose it is fitting that I end the year with another Tron model. Anyone remember my WIP post for this? I started working on the template for this lightcyclist bust mid-year sometime, started building the model in September and have only finished just now. Except for the eyes and some portions of the hair, the build process is relatively simple. Lightcyclists such as this one appear only briefly in the Tron 2.0 video game and com read more..

70's Lamborghini Papercraft

Published on Tue, 29 Dec 2009 05:01:00

Despite the detailed appearance of this papercraft Lamborghini Countach LP400, it is actually a fairly simple build with only 26 parts. My favorite part of the model is that the template gives the option of having the headlights in either an open or closed position. Another nice touch is that there are three body color options: red, yellow and white. Created way back in 2000 by Japanese designer, Yasu Tanaka, the template for this 1:30 scale model is available for download here. read more..

Fifth Element Leeloo Paper Toy

Published on Sat, 26 Dec 2009 16:05:00

One of my favorite science fiction movies is The Fifth Element, but papercraft models based on the film are virtually non-existent. This paper toy is one of the few examples I have come across. Now the face of this "Lila" Russian paper toy doesn't look much like Milla Jojovich in my opinion, but the costume and the orange hair are give aways that it is meant to be the character "Leeloo" from The Fifth Element. From the front, the oddly distorted body of the paper toy makes it look somewhat like read more..

Simple Sock Monkey Papercraft

Published on Thu, 24 Dec 2009 03:41:00

Everyone loves sock monkeys. A unique North American craft item, the first sock monkeys are thought to have been created sometime in the early 20th Century. Sock monkeys are crafted from the signature red heeled socks manufactured by the Nelson Knitting Mills (now Fox River Mills). The stuffed monkeys had become popular enough by 1920 that the Nelson Knitting Mills began including instructions on how to build them with every pair of red heeled socks they sold. This simple papercraft sock monkey read more..

Campbell's Soup Can Papercraft

Published on Mon, 21 Dec 2009 05:27:00

I have begun experimenting with a method of creating papercraft that involves using digital photos. For my first attempt, I grabbed a Campbell's soup can from the pantry and took a few photos from which I created a 1:1 scale papercraft model. I intentionally chose a Campbell's soup can because I think it brings up some interesting questions. Is papercraft art? Most people would say that urban paper toys created by professional graphic designers are art, but what about papercraft created from 3D read more..

Lovecraft Papercraft: Elder Thing

Published on Thu, 17 Dec 2009 15:23:00

Well, it's not Cthulhu, but it comes close. Dubbed the "Elder Things" by the Antarctic explorers who found them in H. P. Lovecraft's novella At the Mountains of Madness, these creatures were thought by the explorers to be extraterrestrials who colonized Earth one billion years ago. This papercraft Elder Thing was created by UK artist Wayne Peters for use in 28mm scale role-playing games. The PDF template is located here. Doctor Who Papercraft: Robot Santa Mask

Published on Wed, 16 Dec 2009 05:46:00

Both the 2005 and 2006 Christmas specials of the Doctor Who television show feature robot Santas. The robot Santas are villains who arm themselves with musical instruments that double as weapons. Their trombones fire mortar shells, their trumpets fire bullets and their tubas are capable of being used as flamethrowers! This 2D printable paper mask is by Peter McKinstry and is based on the robot Santas as they appeared in the 2006 special which is titled "The Runaway Bride". A download of the mask read more..

Functional Papercraft Camera

Published on Sun, 13 Dec 2009 20:07:00

It amazes me sometimes all that you can build with cardstock. Such is the case with this working papercraft camera. The template for this camera originally appeared in a 1979 issue of the Czech magazine ABC which is known for its excellent papercraft models. Using the same principle as pinhole cameras, this papercraft camera takes real photographs using 35mm film. A download of a scan of the template is available here at pinhole.cz, a website run by Czech graphic designer and pinhole camera enth read more..

Christmas Cottage Papercraft

Published on Sat, 12 Dec 2009 06:12:00

Ah, it's the time of the year for Christmas papercraft. This quaint little snow covered cottage is the work of designer Joshua Humphreys. I think he did a pretty good job on the textures. Since there are no instructions, building this becomes more of a Christmas cottage puzzle, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. ^^ The template for the cottage is located on Humphreys' deviantART page here. read more..

Heroscape Papercraft Dice Tower

Published on Thu, 10 Dec 2009 04:38:00

One of my favorite board games of all time is Heroscape. Heroscape is a customizable miniature gaming system that lets you build your own battlefields and create custom armies from a wide assortment of characters such as dragons, secret agents, robots, samurai, vikings, aliens, cowboys and orcs. You can imagine my delight when I found something that combines two of my favorite things: papercraft and Heroscape. This papercraft dice tower was created by a Heroscape enthusiast for use with the game read more..

Antique Toy Circus Papercraft

Published on Tue, 08 Dec 2009 17:39:00

The Victoria & Albert Museums of England are offering an antique toy circus papercraft on their website. The original template for the circus was created by a French company around 1930. The best part of this papercraft is that it is an automata of sorts. Twirl the flag on top and the performers spin around like a merry-go-round. In addition to the usual cardstock, a piece of cork and a barbecue skewer are also required to build the circus. The template for this papercraft may be found here. read more..

1953 Dodge M37 Truck Papercraft

Published on Sun, 06 Dec 2009 01:04:00

The Dodge M37 is a three-quarter ton four-wheel drive truck that was used extensively by the US Army during the Korean War. I don't know for sure, but I think versions of this truck probably appeared in the M*A*S*H television show which was set during the Korean War. This papercraft is offered by a member of the Military Vehicle Preservation Association who owns a real life M37 which he restored himself. A PDF template of the truck is available here. read more..
