Refuge©2010C.L.Burgess 9x12 oil on panelI hope with all my heart that there will be painting in heaven. Jean-Baptiste-Camille CorotThis is not so much a real place as an idea. The cool atmosphere and light can provide a counterpoint to the oppression one feels outside and in. River scenes are contemplative and soothing to the spirit of both painter and observer, I have experienced. I thought Refuge an apt title, because the viewpoint of the sublime herein is compact and tucked away.

Sunflowers in Celadon©2010C.L.Burgess oil on canvas 20x24Never tire of these beauties, although painting the celadon vase always poses its own dilemmas. I think it is one of the most complex color glazes to depict. I still have the vase that I borrowed for the commission I did in the spring. So now it has some company in the yellows of these flowers.

From Peg's Porch©2010C.L.Burgess 9x12 pastel on cansonI did not bring oils with me while up north. So I had my pencil and pastels to do sketches whenever the mood hit. When at my sister's one evening, I found a quiet moment and a nice spot outside where I could study the shadows and light cast in the late afternoon on the hill behind her house.I had few colors with me but enough to get the gist of it all, so I can paint in oils back in the studio. I prefer to sketch in color than graphite.
