All of us make mistakes. And most of our mistakes leave us with a certain "amount of guilt". Feeling guilty because we do something wrong is totally normal. Or at least that's what society wants us to believe.
Guilt is not objective. Guilt is a very individual feeling. Some people don't even feel guilty about murdering somebody. Others even feel guilty because they argued with their parents about their wedding ceremony many years ago!
What if you could stop feeling guilty all the time by simply letting go? Well, some people will have difficulties with that so I decided to share my best techniques for living a life free of the feeling of guilt:
- Give something back:
Be altruistic and share some of your insights on life with those who struggle. Make others feel comfortable and you'll realize that you are not that bad a person after all.
- Say the truth:
Most of the time when we feel guilty we try to hide something from others. For example if you're cheating on your wife / husband it's time to tell the truth. You'll still feel bad about endangering your relationship and marriage but you'll also be able to relax a bit. You'll feel less guilty. Having an affair is easier to grasp than hiding it from the person you love.
- Create something:
Being creative is a wonderful way to get rid of guilt by simply putting your feelings into words, painting your guilt cascade or singing about it. Let go and start breathing again.
You can't change the past. Time is not your enemy. Whenever you feel guilty you have to ask yourself whether you feel guilty because society wants you. Or do you feel guilty because even by your individual standards you did something horribly wrong?
Overcoming the constant feeling of guilt takes some time because you have to learn to accept the fact that you can't change whatever you might have done.
Re-living your mistakes doesn't do any good. You can't make others feel better by feeling guilty. Some people may tell you otherwise but in those cases it's not about guilt at all. It's then about revenge. And that's a totally different story.
You'll also need guidance to stay on track on your new path. It will look scary at first but with the right amount of personal development you'll finally be able to overcome guilt within a short time.
The above techniques do not only work because they distract you from feeling bad. They work because they help you to move on. And moving on is the only reasonable action you can take if you can't stop feeling guilty.
