For a golf beginner, understanding the different types of golf clubs and their uses is very important. Doing so will be very advantageous and helpful to improve faster in golf. Plus, you do not want to be the only guy at Arizona golf resorts who cannot tell his irons from his woods, do you?

Driver – The driver is largest and longest among the golf clubs. It can also give you the most powerful shot, so it is usually used for tee off. The driver's shaft is made of steel, graphite or fiberglass, while the head is made of lightweight titanium to keep it from being heavy despite its size.

Fairway Woods – Despite the name, this type of clubs are no longer made of wood and are usually made of stainless steel. It is used for the fairways and designed to hit long-range to mid-range shots. Men usually carry a 3-wood and 5-wood in their golf bag, while women and seniors add a 7-wood or a 9-wood.

Hybrid – Hybrid clubs are a cross between woods and long irons. They are used for long shots out of bunker and other poor lies. If you need a long-range shot with a high trajectory, a hybrid club is the best way to go.

Irons – Irons are used to hit shots from the fairway to the green. They have thinner clubheads and shorter shaft than the woods, but they provide more loft to your shots. Irons will comprise majority of your clubs – from 3-iron to 9-iron.

Wedge – For shots where you need the greatest lofts, the wedge is your go-to club. There are different kinds of wedges – sand, lob, and gap wedge. It is advisable to carry more than one wedge in your golf bag.

Putter – Putter is used for rolling the ball into hole on the green. It is the shortest club in your set, to give you the most control.

In hotel resorts in Arizona and other places, a golfer is usually allowed to carry 14 golf clubs on the course. It is usually made of a driver, two fairway woods, seven irons, a wedge, a putter, and two other clubs of his choice. Pick clubs according to your skill.
