The Black Papers: On Music as Energy...

Music is energy.  Energy can exist in two states: as potential energy (at rest) or kinetic energy (at work).  The song itself can be thought of as potential energy.  The song performed is kinetic energy. Think of your car and how it works: the gas in your tank is potential energy; when you start your car, that gasoline  burning in your engine is kinetic energy. It’s the same with music. Those CD’s in your storage rack, those songs stored in your i-pod, those lyrics you wrote on your notebook page – are examples of (the potential energy of) music at rest.  When you play that CD, turn on your i-pod, or sing those lyrics you wrote – these are examples of (the kinetic energy of) music at work.  So the gasoline is powering the car…what is the music powering?

The short answer is…Music powers the spirit.  Just think about that for a moment. To expand the point: Just as gasoline powers (energizes) the car engine, music powers (energizes) the spirit. Now, the next questions that follow are…How does it do that?  So, how does this thing work?? And what could I use it for??

Let’s look at it another way. At this point in time-the year 2010- our world is in an era of developing alternative energy sources- solar, wind, fossil and bio-fuels… etc. We are discovering and researching new ideas every day in these areas, opening up new doors to discussions that we wouldn’t have dreamed of twenty, or even ten years ago.

And that is what “The Black Papers” are all about…a discussion about music as an energy source in our lives. Music is energy. And not just any energy…a primary energy to be used as fuel…fuel for the spirit.

From here the conversation is gonna (hafta) get meta-physical. But if you wanna think about music a little deeper, then stay tuned! Sometimes we gotta think outside the box…both for the answers we seek and, more importantly,  for the questions we ask…
