The nations capital is a dull place for 12 months a year, hit January however and the badlands come to life. Summernats was created by renowned revhead Chic Henry in 1988, the Summernats has taken on a life of its own and become a genuine Aussie icon. That evercool annual street car festival that attracts close to 100,000 visitors to the national capital will remain in Canberra for another year. The Summernats Festival is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, with the event to end this evening. The contract to hold the event at Exhibition Park ends this year, but Chief Minister Katy Gallagher says she will work with organisers to try to keep the event in the ACT for the longer term. ”It is an important event not just for Canberra and promoting Canberra to the rest of the country but for our local economy as well,” she said.Every year, up to 1500 of the toughest Australian elite street machines descend on Exhibition Park in Canberra. Coming from around Australia and the world, this incredibly diverse tribe gathers to show off their love of the street machine to an enthusiastic crowd. Lets not get too carried away here, this is a well behaved event, not a church picnic . . .
