Rules for the Novice Golfer

Are you a novice golfer? To get started here are a few helpful hints. Is it a total solution, no, just a place to begin. I have found golf to be a very relaxing sport if not taken to seriously but by realizing your are just starting to play. Learn to play the game one step at a time. The grip, swing, stance and aiming are all skills that must be mastered. Learn to play the game properly, don't rush. Seek help and learn the game right.

Simple Rules to Learn

Every Golf Course or Country Club will have unique rules for foot wear, what type of cleats, and golf cart use, where and how you may drive. Weather is a factor with this; when it has been or is raining most only allow carts on the cart path. There are Some Rules that are Universal Here are some of those universal rules all golfers must know, whether a novice or a pro:

1) Unless you agree prior to starting you may not substitute another ball, the ball teed off with must be used the whole game. Of course if you are like me, you will lose a ball or two. Those of course will have to be replaced with appropriate penalties.

2) Place mark on your ball to identify it as yours.

3) No improvement of the ball position is allowed. Play it where it lies.

4) If the position of the ball is not playable you have several options. These are:

Play from your last shot, drop the ball no more than 2 club lengths from the current balls position, or go back from current position of the ball between you and the ball and the ball may be dropped on that line. All thee above options incur a penalty of one stroke.

Keeping Score

Now for keeping score, in a casual game with friends who keep score doesn't matter that much but in a tournament or in league play you must keep your opponents score. You sure can not say I do not know. You must carefully count the strokes for each hole.

Etiquette Helps

There are some common sense rule your behavior when on the golf course although there are some that should be emphasized... including:

1. Be silent when another golfer is getting ready to hit the ball, whether teeing off or playing the next shot, including putting.

2. Play when it is your turn ie: the ball furthest from the hole plays first.

3. Whoever wins the previous hole tee up first.

4. Be sure everything and everybody is clear before taking your next shot.

5. All divots must be replaced before moving to your next shot.

Never take yourself so serious that you lose control, no one like or want to hear Your expletives, especially when teeing off or putting.

Be courteous and a good sportsman while playing this wonderful game.
