Rock Bottom Is The Only Way Up

The quality of the average hotels in most countries fall into two categories, those that reflect the living standards of the tourist a country attracts and those that are closer to the living standards of her locals.
People in Europe are spoilt when it comes to accommodation. They want a room for every single person in the family and a few more for leisure. They want a place to watch TV and socialise... Some even have a study, and I am not referring to wealthy families in Europe. The average household has at least two bedrooms, One of which is a master bedroom - a concept poor people in some parts of India and Africa would struggle to comprehend. They have separate kitchens, a dining room, a dinning area, an indoor bathroom and a toilet all in one with running water, to wash with and for the toilet. They even some extra storage space. Households with gardens and heated dog kennels outside are just the height of decadence for people living in the Developing World – something they only see on TV. Such kennels are often just smaller and a less shabby-looking versions of the sort of shacks you can expect to find in Kibera, the largest slum in Kenya and Africa.

Around one fourth of the worlds population have inadequate shelter or no house at all and yet home sizes are expanding in the West, even though the number of people per household is shrinking. The united states is an extreme case but still, the average home grew nearly 38% between 1075 and 2000. They grew to on average to 210 square meter, which is twice the size of a typical home in Europe and Japan and 26 times larger in size then the living space the average person in Africa has. Hotels in Europe as a result reflect these trends, so the next time you stay in a Thorpe Park Hotel or one of the Blackpool Pleasure Beach Hotels, count your blessings.
