Parvo...

Parvo has come early to Calgary this year.  Dogs and puppies are getting sick.

Dogs infected with Parvo virus will show signs such as vomiting and diarrhea usually within seven to 10 days of initial infection. Even before the dog shows symptoms of the infection, they will be spreading the virus for three to four days prior to appearing ill.

Once the disease infects a dog, there is no treatment to kill the Parvo virus, only treatment for the symptoms. The virus does not directly cause death, but rather severe dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and infection in the bloodstream. The first step in treatment is to correct dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs are given to prevent or control secondary infections.

Please ensure your dog's vaccines are up to date and keep puppies out of public areas such as offleash areas at the very least until they have completed their shots which should be done in 3 sets at appropriate intervals.  Please make an appointment with your vet immediately if your dog's shots are not up to date.
