Oakland - on SR50 just 1 mile west of the Clermont turnpike exit 272 is an unepected jewel that the serious bicycle riders all know about. You don't want to miss this ride thru Montverde and beyond, on Old Hwy 50E. Heading west from the FL Turnpike you pass a parking lot of busses on the north side of 50. Turn right on Deer Isle Dr at the next light, and then left on CR438/Old Hwy 50E. The road joins CR455, and your escape takes you winding along a lakefront to Montverde Academy, a private boarding school. Continuing on CR455 out of Montverde leads you thru some curves and hills to Ferndale, and a choice - go straight, or go left on CR561A.
Left on CR561A in Ferndale takes you 3 miles to CR561, which also has a really nice ride south of Clermont. If you're looking for a mountain view, you might like the detour to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain, elevation in excess of 300ft. Hey, that is a mountain for Florida! So back in Ferndale turn left on CR561A, go 6/10 of a mile to Sugarloaf Mtn Rd, turn right. You're almost certain to meet a few bicyclists on this road. Follow the curves to the top and you are rewarded with a great view over Lake Apopka. On a clear day you can see the Orlando skyline in the distance. Then you can coast down the mountain to CR561. Left takes you back to US27, north of Clermont and Minneola.
