Earlier today the college football coaches’ poll was announced by USA Today. It is no surprise that the SEC dominated the polls with LSU and Alabama grabbing the top two spots. In fact the SEC leads all conferences with seven teams in the top 25. Like any preseason poll there will be some controversy and some questionable rankings, however this poll has some glaring mistakes.
Here are five big mistakes with the USA TODAY College Football Preseason Poll
5. Arkansas Ranked No. 10
The Razorbacks finished 2011 ranked at No. 5 in the polls. They return a solid team with an improved defense. They have an experienced Tyler Wilson at quarterback and should finish in the top ten by the end of the season.
4. Georgia Ranked No. 6
Am I missing something? Georgia is a very good team and they have the luxury of a schedule that does not feature LSU, Alabama, or Arkansas, but this ranking is just too high. Isaiah Crowell was dismissed for the team and although they may be better without him, this ranking is too high.
3. Notre Dame Should Not Be Ranked
Notre Dame is in the polls by name alone. This team is in shambles and recently suspended quarterback Tommy Rees for the opener. Although the Fighting Irish squeaked into the poll at the No. 24 spot, this team should be on the outside looking in. This team has too many question marks and should get a few wins before being considered one of the top 25 teams in the country. SportsBettingOnline has all of the betting lines for Notre Dame football.
2. Stanford Ranked No. 18
Stanford is a lot like Notre Dame. Andrew Luck made Stanford a national power in college football and with that came a solid reputation. That reputation has allowed for the Cardinal to be ranked 18 in the preseason poll. With all of the player turnover that ranking is inflated and don’t be surprised if the Cardinal are out of the top 25 completely by the end of the season.
1. LSU No. 1
LSU is a very good team and they may win the 2013 BCS National Championship, but the top spot belongs to Alabama. They are defending champs and they have a stock pile of talent on the football field. LSU has an unproven quarterback in Zach Mettenberger and until he proves himself the Tigers should not hold the top spot.
