Movie review: SPLICE (2009)
I spent the entire day in my room, packing at an unbelievably slow pace. I searched the web for a movie to play in the background while I packed and came across “Splice”. “Splice” is a scientific horror film directed by Vincenzo Natali, released in 2009. I had never heard of it until today. Haha.
The movie starts off with Clive and Elsa, two scientists (and lovers) whose work involve splicing (joining) the DNA of different animals to create new hybrids.Their latest is what looks like a malignant mass. Elsa exclaims “He’s so cute!” when she sees it/him.
They make a male blob and a female blob, and leave them together to make baby blobs.
“Love at first sight”: The two blobs are flirting with their tongues.
Abiding by Hollywood convention, Clive and Elsa decide to insert human DNA into one of their creations and end up with Dren, a humanoid with a tail and a toxic sting.. Dren is slowly attracted to Clive, possibly because Elsa inserted her own DNA into Dren when she was still a baby blob.
There’s one scene where Clive turns on his laptop to check up on Dren. He finds her doing a seductive dance in front of the camera and she stares directly into his eyes.. which made me wonder. How long had she been dancing there? She couldn’t have known when he would turn on the laptop right?
In another scene, Clive gives in to his raging hormones and they share a passionate moment. She, in her moment of ecstasy, grows wings.
So sexy.
I know I sound like I’m dissing this movie, but it certainly didn’t appeal to me at all! The Flick Cast said “Splice is funny, frightening, and shocking all at once. It’s a disturbing commentary on where science is heading, and it is not easily shaken off once you leave the theatre.” (mmhmm. As if there aren’t enough movies on this subject.)
The Film Stage gave the movie a 9 out of 10 saying that “This is more than a typical B-movie. It’s got two excellent strong performances, is beautifully shot and is lovably strange. It’ll most likely be divisive due to its tone and some of the more stranger aspects, but any surreal and crazy movie nerd will cherish the Splice experience. So far, it’s one of the best films of the year.” (you’ve got to be kidding me.. the movie was bearable but I wouldn’t give it a 9/10 rating!)
I can’t tell you the ending because the movie stopped loading at 1:27:01 out of a total running time of 1:39:47. If anyone of you has watched the movie, do let me know what happens in the end! :D
