Lurking in the plain sight
The very moment you start browsing the internet, you are under assault from spam and scams, with the countermeasures being limited. We take spam as a fact of life and won’t even bother about what can be done about it, hoping that sooner or later it will die out of its own volition. It’s not a lie if you believe it, but the fact is spam is all around us and not even the most popular platforms such as Facebook have a definitive answer about the best way to fight it.
While certain measures have been taken by this communication giant to reduce spam, the war is far from being won. They’ve won several battles and managed to contain the threat, greatly reducing spam, but the chances to eradicate it completely are slim. Users are empowered to take care of themselves and not become a part of the problem, by increasing the amount of spam themselves.
The filters used by Facebook are working fairly well and the comments that are nothing more than spam are being grayed out, but every now and them they produce errors. It is said that it’s better to set free a guilty prisoner than to imprison an innocent and the same goes for comments that are incorrectly labeled as spam. The bottom line is that sometimes genuine comments are classified as spam, so it pays of to double check if your remarks are not labeled as spam.
If the users get involved and report to Facebook all the fraudulent wall posts and spams, the result will be a considerable decrease on the long run, something that the administrators can’t achieve themselves. One of the methods that proved very successful for cutting down spam on wall posts revolved around the prevention of links to be posted here. It’s common knowledge that most of the spam comments contain links, so by disallowing them spam is also reduced.
While spam can be more of a nuisance, another frequent problem we run into when dealing with social media are the Facebook scams. There are many ways to trick users into installing various Facebook applications, click on some links to view amazing videos or to apply for a tempting promotion. Some are made by amateurs and as a result are easy to spot, while others are so sophisticated that even savvy users can be deceived.
The ones trying to lure you into a scam will usually bait you with apps that are extraordinary and of course free, but you should know that when something seems too good to be true, usually it is. Don’t install any app without prior research and don’t click on any links, especially when they are posted on your wall by persons who don’t have this kind of habit.
Even if you are a victim of spam attack, there is no need to despair because it can still be fixed. Just make sure to check out the recently installed apps and remove them, as well as the links and comments posted on your behalf. Don’t forget to let your friends know want happened so they can stay on the safe side and so you won’t damage your reputations either.
