Barcelona is the second biggest city in Spain, with around 2 million people living there. The city hosted the 1992 Summer Olympic Games and since then, became a very popular destination for tourists, with new buildings, fantastic history and interesting architecture.
Barcelona has many neighborhoods, but the ones that attracts tourists are: “Ciutat Vella”, which is Barcelona’s old town and home for the medieval Barri Gotic; “Eixample”, it’s a modernist neighborhood where you can note the art nouveau buildings; “Gràcia” used to be a place for workers and now has some of the famous Gaudi’s works; “Sants-Montjuïc” is located in the Plaza of Spain and always has fairs and expositions, a great place for tourists with some museums, monuments and festivals.
The off-season would be probably the best time to visit the city, when is not too hot, neither too cold and the city won’t be very crowded. August probably is the busiest month, but also is the month where you can find some shops and some restaurants closed, because the owners go on vacations.
The International Airport of Barcelona is the second biggest in the country. You can find many accommodations in the surrounding area, since there are no hotels inside the airport. To get more information regarding the hotels or attractions, you can call Spain and contact the Tourist Information Center of Barcelona. To make internatuional calls to Spain from your country, you must dial (+34) before the phone number.
If you are willing to try new experiences, make a tour around the city by driving a “Vespa”. Usually you will find English speakers in the tourist areas. But if you go in different locations of the city, you may be in trouble if you don’t speak Catalan or Spanish, the two official languages. Even though the staff of the shops, restaurants and bars do their best to speak English, it may be difficult to understand. Talking about restaurants, the Spanish cuisine is very rich and you can try many different dishes during your staying. Seafood can be eaten in the “Barceloneta” neighborhood, where they serve one of the most popular dishes, the paella. Also there you can have great tapas.
