Is There Help for People with Anorexia or Bulimia?
Weight loss is the aim of people who are diagnosed with either anorexia or bulimia. Because of your eagerness to lose weight and look thinner, you tend to starve yourself. You may also eat in excessive amounts and induce yourself to vomit after a while. You engage in strenuous physical activity and extreme exercises just to get rid of unwanted pounds. Laxatives, enemas and diuretics can also be abused.
You must be aware that these conditions can be caused by psychological problems such as depression and stress. You feel in euphoria when you eat much and purge after. Eating disorders are also related with obsessive compulsive disorder. Because you want to look perfect, you become obsessed with food such as recipes and calculating calories. You may feel helpless when you have an eating disorder. You may not even recognize that you have one. If one of your family members or friends has anorexia or bulimia, you may search for ways on how you can help them recover.
If you have either of the two eating disorders, you can be treated in an outpatient basis as long as you do not have other diagnosed health conditions. If your organs are affected by the severe loss of weight, you might need to be hospitalized. Your doctor will treat your malnutrition through intravenous or tube feeding. If there are any electrolyte imbalances due to frequent self-induced vomiting, this will also be addressed.
Aside from treating your malnutrition, there are psychological therapies that would be rendered to you and your family. Maudsley model is used especially in dealing with eating disorders. The application of this method does not mean that the family is the reason why a person developed any of the eating disorders. This approach aims in helping the family assist their member to recover from her condition. Nutritional education is also provided so that you will become aware about the type of food that you should eat and the nutrients that your body needs. Regular counseling by a health care practitioner is essential in the positive prognosis of your condition. There are also support groups that you can join so that it would be easier for you change your eating habits.
There are also medications that can be prescribed by your doctor in order to treat depression, which is related to anorexia or bulimia. Antidepressants such as Fluoxetine are proven effective in treating bulimia. It is best that you consult a doctor if you are experiencing problems related to your eating habits and weight loss practices.
