Commercial carpet cleaners can cost a lot and still not to provide the result you have expected. By making your own carpet cleaning solution you will save time and money. Also, homemade solutions are safer for the environment and you, as they don't contain any harsh chemicals. Another plus is that you probably already have the ingredients needed for making a carpet cleaning solution. So, if you want to learn how to clean carpets with household products, simply follow these tips provided by cleaners Balham. Instructions
Mix ¼ cup of mild liquid dish detergent with 1 gallon of water. Make sure the detergent doesn't contain bleach or alkaline, otherwise, it can damage the carpet instead of cleaning it.
Once the solution is thoroughly mixed, test it on an inconspicuous area of the carpet. Apply two to three spoons of cleaning solution to the hidden area and let it dry completely. If everything looks normal, proceed to the next steps; otherwise, consider using another carpet cleaning solution.
Fill a spray bottle with the cleaning solution and lightly spray the carpet. Work in small areas (preferably 2 to 3 square feet), so the solution doesn't dry before cleaning the carpet. You can also apply the solution with a sponge, just make sure not to oversaturate the carpet this way.
Scrub the solution into the carpet fibres with a medium-bristled brush.
Saturate a sponge in clean water, squeeze lightly and blot up the excess solution from the carpet. Rinse the sponge and continue blotting at the area until no soap comes out of the carpet.
Go on to next area, and repeat the process.
Use a clean, white towel to blot the carpet dry.
If there are any stains left on the carpet, apply more of the solution to them and scrub them out with a toothbrush. Then rinse and dry the areas.
Once the carpet has dried, use a stiff-bristled brush to fluff the carpet and restore the natural look of the nap, as suggested by cleaners Balham.
