How Can International Travel Affect Your Phone Bill
Traveling to exotic destinations or being on constant business trips around the world is very expensive. But as it turns out not only the traveling is expensive, having a smartphone with you on those travels can also be very costly. Don't be surprised if you go home and there is an enormous phone bill waiting for you in your mail box. Using your cell phone to make a call or even do something as tiny as to read a text messages while abroad can have huge impact on monthly statement from the mobile operator.
There are many ways to end up paying tons of money for your monthly cell phone bill if you have traveled abroad with it. I'll give you some examples on what services that you use or even don't use can have negative effect on the bill. For example, making and receiving calls in a foreign country can be very expensive commodity, especially if you haven't activated international roaming plan on your phone.
But making and receiving calls isn't the only thing that may lead you to paying large sums from your mobile operator. Leaving your voice mail active can also be one of your worst mistakes if traveling abroad. A lot of people, for example, want to bring their mobile phones with them on a trip regardless of the fact that they are not going to use them. And the minute they go abroad they switch to Airplane mode or turn off the phone completely, while the voice mail is still active. However, every call that is transferred directly to voice mail, while you are abroad is going to be charged by the mobile operator on rates for international call. So every recorded message in your voice mail is actually making you pay even more money on your monthly bill.
Receiving data or using data on your smartphone can also lead to paying large sums on mobile services. If you don't have data roaming activated on your phone or even if you did, but only for limited amount of data, you are in huge troubles. Even the most simple thing like receiving a text message with a photo attached to it can mean paying up hundreds of dollars, euros or pounds depending on your residency. If you so badly need to use internet while abroad connect to Wi-Fi hotspots to access the internet.
If you are not careful using your cell phone while on a trip abroad can be very expensive pleasure. When traveling to foreign countries be sure to activate international roaming and data roaming plans, or deactivate the voice mail service if you don't want to get charged for the calls you don't even make, but only receive.
