This is the time we honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for Freedom. We come together on this day, not as Republicans or as Liberals but as "Americans." Today there is no Red States and Blue States. Today there is only The United States.

This solemn day originated during the days of the American Civil War and was originally to honor the war dead on both sides of that conflict. It was after World War I that the observation started to be celebrated in honor of everyone who had died in any war.
