This is the second FRIGIDAIRE 50-PINT DEHUMIDIFIER I have purchased through Amazon in the past year. I've had the first one working in my basement family room since September 2010 and I've been very pleased. This second one will be used in another room in our basement.
Here are the positives:
1) Easy to use - the controls are clear and easy to set (there is a digital indicator you can set for the level of humidity, which works like a thermostat - when the room reaches the desired level, the dehumidifier will automatically shut off)
2) Easy to empty - the water container is very easy to remove and empty - it pulls right out from the front of the dehumidifier and there's a handle you can use to carry it to a sink or tub for emptying.
3) Removes water like crazy! I was shocked at the amount of water this thing takes out of the air. In the hot, humid summer months, this has been a real blessing! Our basement has been damp and unpleasant, especially in the summer months, for years. But no more!
Here are the negatives:
1) You do have to empty the thing - this can be an issue if the room you're using it in isn't close to a bathroom or kitchen. There is no way to attach a hose to this so you can drain the water out continuously.
2) There is no continuous "beeping" to let you know the water container is full - it does beep once, and a red light goes on, but if you're not in the room very often you may not know it needs emptying.
Overall, the negatives have not been a problem for me. I check it regularly and empty the water when it needs emptying. It has kept our basement pleasantly dry since September.
I note that there is a newer model of this out there, which is not only less expensive but does include a way to attach a hose for continuous drainage. The reviews on that newer model have not been as good as they are for this one, so I decided to stick with what I know works well. If continuous drainage is important to you, I suggest checking out the newer model.
