Empowering Microcredits: Vicente Ferrer Foundation

Nagalakshmi is 30 years old, works as cleaning lady and her husband is a farmer. The last crops have not produced the yield expected and her shangam (group of women) has decided to ask the bank for a loan in order to pay the education of her children. Although the majority of women work, the female tasks usually remain unnoticed, and this makes it difficult for them to benefit from the credits provided by conventional banks.
Since 1994, the Vicente Ferrer Foundation (FVF) is fighting against this unfavourable situation by offering loan without charging interests via the Women Development Fund (FDM), an independent and internal bank devoted to granting the so-called microcredits. By means of this micro-loans, women can start their own businesses and generate income. The goal of this micro-funding system, that ranges between 3,000 and 10,000 rupees per individual, is to allow women to be self-sufficient, independent and responsible for their money.
