Diatribe: Should Dannielynn Birkhead Be A Second-Generation Guess Model?

Anna Nicole Smith’s career began in 1992 when a spread in Playboy brought her a tremendous amount of exposure leading to a contract with Guess Jeans.  Possibly most famous for marrying a millionaire almost sixty years her senior, The Anna Nicole Show and her peculiar entourage including her lawyer/lover Howard K. Stern and her son, Daniel.

She made a career of being “famous for being famous”.  In September of 2006, her son died of a lethal combination of methadone, Zoloft and Lexapro just three days after giving birth to her daughter Dannielynn Hope.  She continued to be tabloid fodder as three different men – her photographer ex Larry Birkhead, alleged lover Prince Frederic von Anhalt and Stern – claimed to be the father of baby Dannielynn.  Although Stern’s name was listed on Dannielynn’s birth certificate, a paternity test concluded that Birkhead was her biological father.

On February 8, 2007, after being found unconscious in a Florida hotel room, Anna Nicole Smith was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. The cause of death was found to be an accidental overdose of multiple prescription drugs.

Now, twenty years after Anna Nicole’s first ad campaign for Guess, and five years after her death, her daughter appears to be following in her footsteps as the latest Guess Kids star of the brand’s 2013 spring advertisement.  In the ad, little Dannielynn poses on a beach wearing a denim mini-skirt- white-denim vest, a graphic t-shirt and a hat.  The ads will appear on buses, billboards and more beginning in mid-January.

Throughout her life, Anna Nicole had been compared to Marilyn Monroe and, like that Hollywood icon, she died tragically before the age of 40.  I wonder if it is a bad idea for little Dannielynn to follow in her mother’s footsteps.
