Diatribe: Am I The Only One Who Is Offended When The Pope States Gay Marriage "Threatens The Future Of Humanity Itself"?
I mean no disrespect ... Pope Benedict XVI is the Pope after all … but I take offense with his recent proclamation that “Gay marriage threatens the future of humanity”.
(For starters, I find the term “gay marriage” to be offensive in and of itself. Same-sex couples don’t want to get “gay married”, they want to get “married” just like their friends and neighbors.)
"This [one-man-one-woman marriage] is not a simple social convention, but rather the fundamental cell of every society. Consequently, policies which undermine the family threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself. The family unit is fundamental for the educational process and for the development both of individuals and states; hence there is a need for policies which promote the family and aid social cohesion and dialogue.” – Pope Benedict XVI
When the leader of one of the largest and most influential religions in the history of humanity says that my relationship threatens the future of humankind, I’m appalled. My family is my life and I will fight for it tooth and nail.
Clearly, the Pope needs help understanding that there are millions of homosexuals and that they are a part of humanity! Furthermore, it would appear that he needs help to understand that families come in all shapes and sizes. And his official mathematician should spend some time teaching him about the 90-odd-percent of the population that is heterosexual and raising children.
If the whole one-man-one-woman argument is as important as he would have us believe, his version of “human dignity” should be “threatened” by single parent families and blended families as well. Why is adultery (one of the top ten sins) overlooked and excused? The Pope represents the sort of zealots that carry on about orphans being better off than children with loving same-sex parents. It’s preposterous. Frankly, I think pedophilia is a bigger threat to the children of the world. Surely all Catholics don't share his narrow views.
Pope Benedict appears increasingly out-of-touch with twenty-first-century reality. Talk about a bully! It defies logic to think that children who are raised by one-vagina-one-penis parents are in any way better off than children that have two-heart-two-brain parents.
"Threaten human dignity" indeed. What an awful thing to say.
