The small rural town of Canungra is situated about forty minutes drive to the West of Surfers Paradise in South-East Queensland. Canungra is about forty minutes drive to teh South of Brisbane, the capital of Queensland. With a population of around 1,200, Canungra was originally a timber felling area in the Gold Coast Hinterland. Canungra is the gateway to Lamington National Park, a world heritage listed National Park. Lamington National Park is one of South-East Queensland's most popluar tourist attractions and home to O'Reilly's Guest House.
The main highway between Beaudesert and Nerang travels through Canungra. In the town centre there is a supermarket, hotel, dentist, doctor, primary school, chemist, cafes, specialty shops and real estate offices.
There is a public sporting facility with a council run swimming pool complex. Visitors to the area can camp on Canungra Creek. There are show grounds where the Canungra Show is held annually, as is the Canungra Rodeo. Canungra is popular with people involved in the equine industry, with many world class thoroughbred studs operating in the district.
Canungra is serviced by the Gold Coast Airport and Brisbane Airport, each of which is about a one hours drive. Accomodation is available at the Canungra Hotel and the Canungra Motel.
