Bobsled - VoIP App for Facebook
Considering that Facebook has more than 500 million users, creating a VoIP app for the social networking site, which will allow the users to make free calls between themselves, is a great idea. And that is what the mobile operator T-Mobile achieved by creating the Facebook app Bobsled.
Bobsled is a free VoIP application available for computers, but there is version of the same app available for iPhone and Android phones, and, of course, this means that Bobsled is also available for iPad, iPod Touch and all Android computer tablets. With Bobsled the users can make free calls to whoever you like from your Facebook friends for free, but you can also make free calls to landline numbers in USA, Canada and Puerto Rico. Although, Bobsled sounds great, this app is only useful in North America, because you won't be able to call Ireland or any other country in the world with Bobsled, except the above mentioned three. Still, there is no information whether Bobsled is going to be developed further and to allow the users to call more countries in the future.
The Bobsled app itself is very easy to install and use. The app is downloaded and installed on your computer. When you enter in your Facebook account, you will notice that there is new icon added to the contacts in the Facebook chat, which is a small telephone. If you click on the icon, you can make free calls to any of your Facebook friends directly through the social networking site. Your friends don't even have to have the Bobsled app installed in their accounts to receive the call.
Bobsled app has really great potential, especially, when you consider that you can make free calls to anyone in Facebook directly through the website of the most popular social network. On top of that there are versions for this application now available for smartphones and computer tablets, too. However, you cannot even make cheap calls to Ireland with Bobsled, something you can do with Google Voice and Skype. And this is what this application is lacking, because Facebook is a large community from all over the world and not just USA, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
