Some medications or drugs hold the tendency to make a person become dependent or form a habit of abuse that increases over an extended duration of time.  To become physically or psychologically attached to certain medications, whether legally approved for sale or not, are possible.  Medications like narcotics, sedative and tranquilizers are the ones that are often thought to be addictive, but now even cough medicines are included.  Antidepressant users were also wondering if there is a possibility of being addicted to their medications. Scientists are also trying to develop psychedelic mushrooms as source of new formulations of antidepressants.  

Researchers are conducting more studies in the sue of antidepressants to fully understand how they affect the body.  Bouts of anger and melancholia may also be overshadowed by irritability and aggression, as seen in some individuals.  A detached personality with desires to be alone is what most people say depression sufferers are. Antidepressants were designed to alleviate these symptoms so that a person can get his or her life back after feeling lost. Most people who took antidepressants have experienced difficulty getting off them when they needed to quit, though. Those who quit abruptly had been left with experiencing withdrawal symptoms when the drug was taken out of their system.  

The presence of withdrawal symptoms after quitting antidepressant have puzzled most psychiatrists.  The possibility of tolerance may exist but addiction has not been one of the problems seen during clinical trials.  Adverse effects are minimized through careful dosing regulations so as to have a beneficial effect instead. Doctors encouraged their patients to taper down the dose of their medications slowly, so as to prevent any withdrawal symptoms. A good support group may help in getting the person through the tough times after quitting their medications. 

The withdrawal symptoms do not relate only with antidepressants but also to the side effects that were reported by most patients.  Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which are more recent formulations, were also seen to have their own set of side effects.  Mental statistics have indicated that most antidepressant users have used their medications for well over two years.  Worsening of withdrawal symptoms may also be attributed to the long term use of such medications.  Zoloft birth defects were also a cause for concern for pregnant women using Zoloft.
